I have a 5yo ISHXHann who has a very distinctive mane, it's very very grey, whilst she is a very sold bay with minimal white, she has a few white hairs in her tail but other than two tiny socks and a little star she has no other white hairs anywhere.

I get lots of comments about it, with theories ranging from 'she's a roan' 'she'll probably grey out' 'she's a minimal white coloured'

I've certainly never come across anything like it and neither has anyone i've met who have commented on it, so what do you think?

Her dads a white grey, and her mum is Bay as far as i know!

Photo is a fully paid for social media image hence Photographers name;

With her I think it's an unusual presentation of sabino (by which I mean likely an untestable form of 'white spotting pattern' which is the general name but lots aren't testable for - only SB1 and SB2 at the moment I think. For some reason it got stuck in her mane :) I can't remember what her legs look like but the jaggedness of her star would suggest it too.

I guess she could be a minimal tobiano too but the mix of hairs make me think not.

She definitely isn't grey ;)

I had a NFxTb who was dark bay with a grey mane. His mane was black when I bought him and went grey about 5 years old. His tail had some white hairs but looked more black then grey, His mane was definitely grey though. He was very similar to yours and it is interesting to see another as no-one could tell me my horses colour!

My black rabicano has a mane like this, his whole body has the roaming and the raccoon tail as well.

I was always told these types of mane showed the silver gene........

I take your bays and raise you a chestnut. (sorry for the pic its the only one when her mane is slightly clean. her tail is also grey underneath. she has started to show some white hairs on her belly, only noticeable if you look closely but??? she is 7

Silver bays have a blonde sort of mane rather than just black and white hair, although and it will also always show in the tail

we don't have a lot of silver in this country, there are bits about, mostly in gypsy cobs and miniatures.

you're so predictable!

She is called MP festival, and is mentioned on the tapestry blog page but I though you might like a pic :D

ponies4ever it is not that unusual in chestnuts, as tends to be linked to flaxen then. My chap has a very black and white tail :)

My brown New Forest had a silver tail growing up, now it looks brown to the eye, but close up it's a salt & pepper effect. Always wondered why it was like it

As a foal:

2yold:

And now:

hmm now that is actually a bit more odd as he also looks to have no other white markings, just that he fancies a blond tail as a baby! Babies do seem to do some odd colour things at times. It looks like most of the black grew down as a 2yo?

At the roots it's still coming through a mix of brown & blonde just like that middle photo! But the overall look is brown until you look closely. He is 9 now. No other white hairs on him :) He is odd, i'll give you that. He doesn't have a black hair on his body either, and his legs look red in the sun light!

Fwiw from his adult pic I would poss err on whether he could poss be buckskin rather than bay, but the foal pic doesn't convince me. would you mind if I put him on one of the genetics fb groups as they might well know why it happens.

Go for it! :D

This might be a better a show of his colours

atm thinking odd/slow filling in of the bits that are supposed to be black. I'll check again when the american's wake up ;)

spottybotty that is pretty typical presentation of flaxen in a some chestnuts.
Baby looks cool, dun or foal camo? Body colour is tricky to go from when they have LP (appy gene) too as it shifts the base colour.

whats the group called? I'd be interested to join and see what they make of my boy.

The two I am on is Equine colour genetics and equine colour genetics explained. IME the latter has more experienced members, the former tends to give some right odd answers at times by people who should just watch and learn rather than guess ;) but it does get more traffic. (the explained group came about after an argument in the other one!)

I just like to see pretty horses :)
