I apologise in advance if you own a similar horse but.......

Friend I haven't seen for a while speaks to me on phone.

Her: Have you seen the new mare on xxxxx yard.??
Me: Oh the painted chestnut wotsit...??? *oh *that* thing, paint horse, white face, blue eyes, creeps me out*
Her: Yeah, that's the one...what do you think of her..???
Me: Erm, it looks ok..??? * I'm being nice*
Her: Is that it, ok...???
Me: Well it's not my cup of tea to be honest *See, polite*
Her: What do you mean by that..???
Me: Well it's got a rather "unique " look, not to my taste but I'm sure her new Mummy loves her haha *Face only a mother could love, still trying to be polite*
Her: So you don't like her..????
Me: Not really no, as I said, not my cup of tea *trying to be polite*
Her: So you thinks she's ugly..???
Me: Hang on, I didn't say that *it's pig ugly, seriously *
Her: So what do you think...???
Me: *loses patience * Quite frankly I think it's bloody hideous, it's got weird legs and looks like it's possessed *it does, seriously, wild eyed and crazy looking*
Her: Oh well that's just %$#@&**% charming, she's my new horse......

Erm...???????

Oh dear...

Well, as they say, beauty is in the eye of the beholder!

And if it's the conformation as well as the fact that you don't do the blue eyes / white face combination, then you've not really got anything to be sorry for really. The first is fact and the second is just what you do/don't like.

It’s a bit unfair of her not to tell you, but to ask your opinion. She obviously liked it enough to but it so that should be all that matters to her.
Lesson for you, next time someone asks you what you think of a particular horse, your first response should be, ‘what do *you* think of it?’

Or better still, 'I haven't seen it'

Well she shouldn’t have kept digging really!

Certain horses are marmite. I really don’t get Appaloosa’s but a lot of people do like them. I would do as you did, try and be polite, but if you are going to have a marmite horse some people are obviously not going to like it.

There was a cob opposite me for a while, that we call the Cow Pony. I don’t even know it’s name so I’m pretty sure I’ll say it in front of the owner one day ?

That was a total entrapment conversation!! My friend did that with me too re a horse and i had to be polite in the beginning....now she sees what i see and i can finally be honest about her horse :D

i dont have this issue with spud, im normally the first to say how ugly and horrifically put together he is hahha people usually have to stand up for him

pah, I got unfriended for suggesting that someone's new buckskin horse was an excellent colour to deal with poo stains on. It was a factual statement but apparently not the right one. Still don't quite understand it.
You see I would definitely see that as an added bonus :) and would be well chuffed if someone pointed it out.

The ugliest horses are usually the kindest..but beauty is in the eye of the beholder..?..I thought I was foot in mouth girl..??
Really, tbh not what I've found but as I spend more time looking at a horse than riding it, I'm afraid it does have to be nice to look at as well as safe to ride. I'm another that doesn't like blue eyes or coloured horses with too much white, I also don't like spotty ones nor cobby types but others do, so that's fine. I certainly wouldn't get upset if someone didn't think my horse was pretty. Honestly, some people just need to grow up. However, generally I can find something nice to say about a horse even if it's just I'm glad you've found something you like.

I'll be honest, I just got irritated and, in my defence, it's probably one of *the* ugliest horses I've ever seen. I couldn't even pic one specific thing out about it, the whole horse upsets my equilibrium ?????
Looking for my first horse I posted a horse wanted ad that said " Temperament more important than looks", got a call and drove miles to see a horse. It was cremello, dished really badly and looked as if it was three horses put together in a rush. That was when I knew I was deceiving myself! Bought a 15hh TBx mare who was very pretty, not mareish and a total novice ride but sadly didn't have the experience to know what a gem she was.

If i had saw my spud in an advert there is no way i would have bought him. He only ended up with me cause he was a good boy (eventually) hahaha but now i find myself looking for spuds in ads...

I am going to defend this "ugly" horse! Handsome is as handsome does! I had a lesson with my, then, instructor yonks ago and the horse in before me was to my eyes hideous, I was insensitive enough to mention what I thought to my instructor who came back very fast with the above statement and said the owner thought the world of him and he suited her perfectly. Since then I have felt it best to keep my thoughts on other's horses to myself! I hope your friend gets to love her horse none the less!

I will openly admit that I wouldn't have bought Arty if she hadn't attached herself to my OH and followed him around like a lost dog, plus I really liked both her parents so thought why not. The location of where she was kept was inaccessible to the lorry I had at the time so a friend bought her van conversion to pick her up for me. I think her exact words were "where's the rest of it", and her face and tone of voice told me that this was the diplomatic version of what she was thinking ?. I didn't blame her, it took me quite a while to warm to the misshapen runty little critter ?
