basically there are some wicked nasty people going around putting a small plait in the horses mane - the one's that they have choosen to steal...then they get picked up later...it's a signal to the men in the lorry.

I would inform the police, horsewatch people, and if possible remove horse from field to secure place..this isnt always possible so I would keep a very close eye and remove said plait also, make sure horses are freezemarked, micro chipped the lot..but to be honest if they want to take horse they will no matter what...it's very scary to think!!!

Not quite sure, think there has been a lot of it going on in the south east, glad my horsey only likes to be caught by somebody he knows! Hope they aren't targeting the eventer type

I don't think I believe it. I accept that there are plaits, but I think they are put there by children or the wind or rough mutual grooming. I don't think they are put there by thieves. And if you think about the practicalities of plaiting/theft, I don't think it adds up.

are these the same guys that were driving around last year in the white transit and red 4x4 taking photos of horses for horse thieves???!
Maybe we should get our horses hogged just to be on the safe side.

Mine's hogged so they'll have a job!! and if they can load her - they're welcome to her!!

there was a spate of this happening in my old area in portsmouth and also things like tyres being left at gates etc it happens anywhere in country I certainly dont think it's kids sadly the horse I knew of was targeted and was taken and once word of mouth got out the horse was dumped in a nearby field and returned to owner thankfully.

Just a little quote from an email from BHS which I think sums it up really

"Think about it, if a horse is happy for you to approach it, probably in the dark, and let you put a plait in it's mane then chances are it will also let you approach it later on to put a headcollar on and lead it out of a field and into waiting transport.
"

The whole email was about a horse that had been stolen
