Everyone near/in Oxford - also in NL

This is also in NL but didnt get that much response and I know alot of you dont go in there!

I'm HOPEFULLY going to get into Brookes uni, and move to Oxford in September, leaving the horse I have shared for nearly 2 years, behind - gutted Aswell as giving up a few other horses I ride too.

Anyway I would really like to know what yards are near oxford, or riding centres, clubs, and generally please shout if you are nearby. Also tack shops/feed merchants etc. This is because there is no way I can cut horses out of my life for 3 years, (I have ridden and owned horses all my life) so i'm going to join the uni club, and advertise for a share/rider available etc.

If your nearby, also please PM if you might be looking for a sharer either begining of winter or spring, or remember me if you know of anyone. I'm sure I will be able to provide many good references, and i'm very reliable and sensible And I like to think im not a bad rider too..on all sorts of horses.

Just shout even if you have no information to give! Or if your going to/at Brookes, or if your in the club or team at Brookes :)
 
Hi I studied at Oxford for 4 years but stupidly never joined the riding team and really regret it now! I did take part twice in inter-Oxford college competitions twice which was great fun but I really wish I'd joined the riding club. I went on to study PG in London and didn't make the same mistake again! I learnt so much in my riding team for 1 year and K know nt friend who did ride in Oxford had a great time! Im not sure where they train but it used to be Blewbury EC (fairly sure it isnt now tho?). The only other riding school i kno of is the one in Botley.

Anyways, I'm now based up near Banbury in North Oxon (though horse is currently down near Didcot) so if you're ever after yards in that area let me know. Afraid I can't help on tack shop front - there dont seem to be many good ones so I just orde stuff off Internet!

Thanks for that info - looks like Didcot and Banbury are both quite far from Oxford itself, (im trying to get to know/map out the area !) what is the transport/bus system like around the area?

Well Didcot is the next stop South on the train line to Paddington (via Reading) from Oxford - I think there are also buses. Blewbury EC is a few miles out of Didcot but I remember when I went there with the riding team we got the train to Didcot and then the local bus which stops right outside the riding school.

Banbury is the next stop North of Oxford on the train and is actually on the direct train line to London Marylebone (and also Bham and Manchester). There is a bus from Oxford -> Banbury but it's very slow (and probably expensive!).

To be honest though public transport doesn't suit me so I drive around everywhere in my car (I work in Oxford, horse near Didcot and live in Banbury so I drive about 2.5hrs a day at the moment and using public transport would take much longer). Horse is only near Didcot as I used to live and work in South Oxon and I just haven't moved him closer to me yet (will be doing so shortly).

I don't know a great deal about accomodation at Brookes, but it's quite hard to keep a car in the centre of Oxford as there isn't much parking. I know people who did it whilst they were at Uni but they were in the minority. My bf parked his at Merton College's car park near Catz College in first year after getting a permit through a friend, then parked it in Marsden (which is now resident's parking only), then in the park and ride for whole terms (they used to do season tickets - not sure if they still do) and then in our last year he'd park it up in Cowley for odd days. To be honest though, it's pretty hard to park anywhere in Oxford long-term unless you have residents parking, so you'll probably be stuck with using public transport (which in the centre of town is fine).

This is the riding school in Botley (it's off the Botley Road I think which is West Oxford) - http://www.oldmanorhouseriding.co.uk/ I've never been there myself but heard good things about it and used to know someone that taught there.
 
If you have a car I might have something that you could hack/jump 1-2 times a week, on livery just off A4074 between Oxford & Reading. I do all his flatwork though.
 
Well i'm off to Oxford in two weeks, with NO car, so i'm still looking for accessible horses near Oxford, I do have a few leads but I dont want to put all my eggs in one basket!
