Don’t know why I’m surprised. I know he changed hands but it’s still disappointing. Maybe ballydoyle would like to pay his rehab fees or retire him to their outfit in America.

Poor horse. 😡

Poor guy. Like Black Beauty's Ginger - sold on over and over until bought by a scumbag.

Not really Ballydoyle's problem though. Maybe whoever sold him to the scumbag should pay?

Poor horse looks terrible and that’s really upsetting but it’s not down to Ballydoyle’s fault unless every breeder is responsible for every horse their whole life. The article itself says it’s not the breed or the industry its people. A girl I know had a horse that she was struggling to care for who’d been owned by really wealthy people and I did think about contacting them but I put her in touch with RoR for their vulnerable horse scheme for veterinary advice and help. Let’s hope he and the others all get the care they need and who knows Ballydoyle owners may help.

If you all read what I actually said I don’t blame ballydoyle. As I said they sold him on.

But the gesture of helping him now would be a good thing for them and racing. 🤷‍♀️

The organisation who rescued him obviously anticipated this - for anyone who hasn't read it, the article states

Kentucky Humane Society Equine Care said: “The reason we didn’t post his name is because we know some may look up connections and send hate mail or start bashing people who likely have NO IDEA this horse ended up like this and would have likely done anything to prevent it, had they known. “He’s probably multiple hands removed from the folks who last had him at a track. This is a bad-people problem in MANY breeds and disciplines. This horse happened to be much more trackable than the average horse or some emaciated unknown mixed breed horse caught on a mine site. Either way, they ALL deserve better."

You said " I don't know why I'm surprised" which does read as if you blame Ballydoyle, and you did mention them in the title alongside the words kill pen.

I have really mixed thoughts on this. I agree and disagree that it isn't Ballydoyle's fault. They shipped the horse over to America to race him and sold him when he came last in the breeders cup and then 5/8 in his next race. He then ran three more times - each time for a different trainer and each time pretty much came last.

Being cycnical Ballydoyle realised that the horse didn't suit racing in America/ wasn't going to achieve much racing again and also decided he wasn't worth them using at stud or flying back to Ireland/ UK so to maximise their profits they sold him on in America - at that point they could have retired him or done something better for him than just selling him on? On the flip side - they may not have known that he wasn't going to go on and do anything and thought he could have been a good addition to a smaller/ lesser stud and so not have had any worries about selling him on.

I agree though that Ballydoyle have nothing directly to do with the fact he ended up in such a bad place and in such bad condition. They had no way of knowing that, he was sadly very unlucky and it's not possible for all racehorse owners to keep track of their horses - outside of racing there's sadly plenty of examples of similar happening.

I think I just feel they possibly could have seen they'd left the horse on a downwards spiral and especially as he'd been a successful horse for them, it feels that if that was the case they owed him something more.

I think that at one of the Newmarket sales horses went to around 30 different countries and that does sometimes worry me, as to what the aftercare is. War Envoy sold for around 160,000 dollars so wasn't entirely written off.
