has anyone had an ex racer that was tubed for racing and that windsucks as well??

i have an ex racer, he doesnt windsuck, but he wood chews and box walks and is a general stress head! i knew of an ex racer that windsucks, he had bad gastric ulcers last year and they nearly lost him but he is fine now but has to be constantly eating forage to reduce the amount of windsucking he does.

surly if they put a tube in this throat it was just to help him breath better when racing, so that shouldnt be a problem.
are u thinking the 2 could be linked?

Hi I already have him he had a tube in his throat for racing.

this is a wild guess but i would imagine that is a cheap option for horses with a problem airway and this opens it up instead of having an operation such as a tie back. does he breath heavily in ridden work??

he had a tube to enhance his performance the problemn is that he windsucks to and i have been told that he should not have a collar put on but he is losing weight which i am sure is because of the windsucking so i have no idea what to do.

this is how my friends horse started by losing weight and they found he had gastric ulcers if it continues i would seek vet advice, we have a windsucker at the yard and he wears a collar but you must put all there food on the floor as its extremley difficult and uncomfortable to eat from a haynet with a collar on .

cover everything in nasty tasting stuff that he uses to windsuck on, never actually brought any but im sure a friend got some from a tack shop.

give him plently of hay, and a treat ball to keep his mind off windsucking.
my friend even painted all the field fenching with washing up liquid to stop her horse doing it

Try feeding Coligone........ Kate is a user on here if you want to contact her direct,,,, cant think of her user name! but if you look up coligone it might be worth a try as it greatly reduced windsucking in one of mine!

Just messaged her on Facebook, her user name is H's Mum on here!!!

Mine is hobdayed and windsucks! I don't collar her as she doesn't do it that much. She is on a gastric supplement aswell, but hasn't completely stopped the windsucking!

Tubing is usually a last resort for horses with breathing problems when racing. Most people I have known in the industry have tried the good old tongue tie first and foremost before having further investigation done on the horse by a vet. Depending on what is causing the reduced performance -resulting in gurgling or making a noise - then the horse will either be hobdayed or have a tieback performed. I know of a horse that did have surgery done but it failed and a trainer advised having the horse tubed. The owners didn't want to put the horse through anymore and also add yet more expense so the said horse was retired from racing.
The most famous horse to be tubed in recent years was the now deceased Party Politics winner of the Grand National in 1992. He was a very big horse. Tell me OP is your horse a big one? I am only asking as the one I knew with the breathing problem that most likely would have needed tubing to perform on the track was a big lad.
I don't have any experience of tubed horses but I do know that you are supposed to keep the tubed area very clean and be wary of muddy conditions.
