I wouldn't normally comment on for sale ads, but I saw this horse for sale on horsequest (Looks likes its owned by a certain feed company) under the ex-racers section for £5k, which I thought was rather a lot!?

Just a passing thought really, but would anyone actually pay that much for an off the track ex-racehorse?

my friend trains and they ve just sold one, 9year old and sound, but im not sure sane!!! for £1000 and he won loads last season, but not easy to train so they decided a different lifestyle mayb better for him

Hmmm...........I agree that seems rather alot. I have two tbs and it has been suggested to me that getting a horse off the track would be a good way to get a bargain for my next purchase.

Not at that price though!!

my ex boss used to buy 3 or 4 ex racehorses a yr straight off the track he would pay about £500-£700 for each but no more than that. they were all lovely horses some of wich had won a fair bit of money.

I swoon at most of the ex-racers on there!!

Totally irrelevant point but, one day ....

I bought my ex-racer almost 4 years ago very cheap from a well known rehoming centre. Just after that they started to become 'popular & fashionable' just as coloureds had done before what with the ROR etc. My friend bought one from the same rehoming centre as me 18 months later and paid over double what I did. It seems if you can buy straight from the trainer you pay a lot less.

In the other sections there have recently been a lot of ex racehorses that are alredy successful in their retrained spheres for around that price.

I wasn't missing something then! I paid a lot less than that for my boy, and I think he's much nicer (but of course I'm biased ;-) )

Yes I have seen some v nice ones that have been reschooled for around that price, which imo is fair enough.

I just found him, looks like a nice animal, not worth that though. I just spent £1200 on a mare just of the track and she hacks and has done a few jumps!!

I brought an ex race horse. It depends on how they are bred as too how much it is - was it a mare? They could be selling it for breeding?

I saw an ad for that horse in H&H recently as it also had the feed co logo. I think they must think it's got a future in ROR classes. Seems a lot to me too.

hmm im not sure alot of showing people are now going down the exracer route for the ROR classes, i persume heyll pay enough for a nice well bred, good moving and good confo horse

so think it depends on the individual

i bought my mare in sept just off the track for a bit more than most of said above and she new nothing but racing lol

suppose it depends what the individual is willing to pay for one too

well i wouldnt! i paid £1k for my boy as a just turned 4yo who had done a couple of hacks after comming off the track.

that was the top end of what id been prepared to pay, the other ex racers i looked at (but wasnt quick enough to snap up!) were all in the £500-£700 mark and were literally off the track as in raced last week/last month. they were all sound just too slow too.

fair enough if its been schooled on and done some shows post racing, but i do think some of the prices on HQ are ridiculous for the ex racer sec.

Saw one advertised on there for around 8k not long ago! Looked great, though and had qualified for HOYS.
Guess it depends what the horse has done after racing...
