been riding an ex horse for a few weeks now for a lady, he is a lovely lad and hes 9 , however i am having trouble with his head he keeps tossing and shaking it when in walk he will trot but its very slow and reluctant i havent been riding with too much of a contact as i know this is a gradual thing he also plants himself in the arena and i have to be firm to get himt to move forward again, ive asked the owner to get his teeth checked asap.. do you have any more advice if this persists\?
thank you

In that order.

If he was a jumper, many of them have had falls and some will be nursing back or neck problems.

Good luck trying to persuade the owner!

All the normal checks need doing but the first thing that comes to mind is has he been schooled properly since racing or is he genuinely confused about what he is being asked to do, if he has not had the basics instilled then you really need to go back and treat him as if he knows very little, most are forward thinking but some will stop rather than go if the don't understand what you want, so lunging, long reining, hacking and gradually ask a little more from him but don't get fixated on what the head is doing get him relaxed, forward and having fun, if he is supposed to be educated then still go back a step and try and work out hacking getting him going along in a relaxed way.

I see from your new thread you have given him up. If the owner will not investigate his problems, you have done the right thing.
