If anyone knows of an ex-racehorse in the South Wales/Bristol area that is:
3-7 yrs of age.
approx 17hh
preferably an NH type (mare of gelding -no preference)

for a gentleman to hunt + general all-round activities

can you kindly PM me. Thank you.

Why don't you try trying to locate some local racing stables - try asking the jockey club they should be able to help you. Or you could try calling Heroes or one of the other racehorse rehabilitation centres and asking them if they have any contacts in your area?

However, if you do go down this route please, please, please make sure you have it properly vetted. Xrays of all 4 feet and and a thorough investigation into knees and kissing spine too.

These youngsters can have a lot of soundness issues due to the pressure of work on early bones, back and joints.

Jumpers do start a little later than flat.

Good luck.

It depends how much time and effort you want to put into retraining it. I personally would be pretty cheesed off if I had spend a lot of time and money bringing an animal on only to find it is unrideable in the long run and have to start all over again.

That is also putting aside the emotional attachment to a new animal. Some of us to get a bit attached to the old gits.

You are absolutely right Mcnaughty. We see owners all the time who have spent alot of money on having their ex-racehorses retrained (when they've not been able to do it themselves) only to find 6-12 months down the line there is something amiss which precludes the horse from doing what was intended, say eventing, dressage, etc.

There is this idea that all ex-racehorses are cheap, but why should they be especially when someone has invested a long time retraining it, started competing it, etc. We have one for sale at the moment for a client and it has a £7,000 price tag and quite right too as its now novice eventing.
