I want to purchase an ex race horse and wanted to get one direct from the trainer or owner. Where do the trainers dispose of their horses? Does anyone know.
Why do you want an ex racer? Have you had one before? Do you know what you could be letting yourself in for as some can be hard work! Especially if they are sold complete with mobile phone and they can contact the TB injury hotline to compare notes with other ex racers!
search on line for racehorse trainers then email them all! Don't forget to say 'if you can't help can you suggest someone who might be able to..'
Personally I always buy from Doncaster bloodstock sales. This tends to be the last sale for unwanted bloodstock, a bit of a last ditch attempt to sell them so the prices are much lower....
I have an ex racehorse, he was originally sold at a meat market, when his previous owner bought him. When I bought Charlie the only thin he knew how to do was stand to gallop. My advice would be to be prepared for hard hard, but rewarding work. They have completely different needs to other breeds, have bad feet, flat footed and are usually in poor condition off the track. It has taken me 3 years to train Charlie in to a potential dressage star. But it has so far been a very rewarding and challenging journey
