Hiya I am new to this site and I followed a link which bought me to it onto a discussion about where to find ex-racehorses. I am looking for another one to bring on, compete and be a companion to my ex-racehorse who I have re-schooled, he is about to go BE this september. I was wondering if anyone new of any around I am not fussed by temperament, vices must be over 16h I am 5'10 but under 10st and a gelding. I have had a lot of experience I have worked in one of the top NH yards in the country but had to stop as I had a very bad accident when one of the horses had a heart attack whilst doing work and crashed through white railings and into 10ft drainage ditch with me on top I semi-ruptured all the ligaments in my left shoulder and could no longer hold the strong ones which is what I loved to do, and couldnt keep riding down the gallop looking at the damage I did to the vegetation! I would be very grateful for any assistance I am not willing to spend a fortune and really the less the horse has done the better! Many thanks.

Ooo sympathy for you and the poor horse sounds awful and welcome to the HHO forum.
I have just bought a 3 year old race trained thoroughbred but not raced from a dealer, there are quite a lot of dealers who get them, you can pick them up at Ascot bloodstock sales, there are irish bloodstock sales as well. Depends where you are and how far you want to travel, theres also a couple of charities, heros (sale and loans) is one of them and theres the race horse to riding horse website, they might have some links to ex racers for sale.

Hiya thanks, yea wasnt the best experience though nor does it stop me riding anything just be nice to find a friend for my boy that I can help as well!

The Moorecroft (google them) Centre do great works for TBs - They are mainly all ex National Hunt, and are either there bc they dont want to be a race horse or bc theyve had tendon damage as some do - we had a couple of ours go there when Mum gave up training (I miss those days!) when it first started - one went on to Novice event the other to be a hunter.
Alot of trainers dont like to sell to the "general public" regardless of who you have worked for as there can be too many reprocussions when things go wrong. Well my uncle certainly never did. They all went to the sales
Ascot and Doncaster are always good to pick up a bargain if youve a good eye for a good hoss!!!
Good Luck - I would never ride anything else!

Ooh, sorry to hear about your accident, sounds nasty! Where abouts in the country are you? I do often hear of horses and was told about one the other day, I could find out if he is still available if you aren't too far away.

Thankyou no neither would i! my bf thinks im nuts he says hell buy me a nice warmblood and i say no i want another racehorse he finds it funny!

The one I am thinking of will probably be a freebie - I shall find out more for you!

Been reading this thread, and am getting quite excited on your behalf! There are various racehorse rehoming centres, there's one near Chard, I think, not far from you, that's run by Stan and Elaine Mellor, and Greatwood near Marlborough which I can recommend. And as others have posted, trainers are often quite helpful. Let us know how you get on. Ex-racers, there's nothing better!!
