Ex-Racehorses

Does anybody own an ex-racehorse? I am really interested in one at the place where I work.
I have ridden her twice now and she has been a little star. She is literally foot perfect in the school and bombproof on the road.
She doesn't like to be in the stable for a long period of time, which is understandable if you used too be a racehorse, is it?
What are their temperments like overall? She has only just come into the yard, so I will get to know her more. But I would like so information before she sells!:p:p
 
I think it depends on the individual horse for character.

We have two ex racehorses. One is very sharp and I don't 100% trust her, but the other is very solid, very dependable and very sweet ( and she's only been out of training 6 weeks!)
 
I love ex-racers. :) They are of course, individuals but if you've clicked with this TB then that's a fab start. My ex-racer hates being stabled too, but I've known plenty that happily live in at night and out during the day. Mine has a very sweet temperament, she really is lovely to be around.

Do you know the history of the one you like? Did they come out of racing due to injury, wind problems or slowness?
 
I have 4!
Ones a new boy and hes so far proved very sweet and eager to please.
One is a complete gonk but i trust him with my life and love him to death
Other is retired now and is a quirky sod and knows his likes and dislikes but has always been like this, he is my golden boy and he knows it!
And last but not least this one is a grumpy grouchy quirky swine who is also now retired as i just gave up on his reschooling, love him but he is much happier being a pet than working!

They are all diferent but such amazing clever people! Love them!
 
I have 2 (ex-chasers) and wouldn't swap them for the world. Totally agree that they are all different but if you like her then that's a great start.

1 of mine is a total star and always has been from the moment he left the track. He has turned into a school master and loves his work in all disciplines. The other is rather quirky but I know him inside out and can see what I'm going to get from the moment I arrive at the yard. You have to deal with him on the ground before you get on at times, so I wouldn't let just anyone ride him.
 
today i love mine lol the other day he was threatened with the glue factory;) but that goes for the others who aren't ex racers too, they're all individuals and i try not to get too hung up on the fact that one is supposed to be nuttier than the rest:)
 
Mine is brilliant, nothing phases her out hacking. will pass anything, tractors, tree fellers combine harvesters. loves her stable, never a problem with her staying in. She can be a bit emotional sometimes and isn't just anyones ride. very sensitive and intelligent. If you have clicked with this one then that is half the battle.
 
Mine is amazing. He has some issues expressing himself when he's excited but nothing major and he tries so hard. Absolute angel.
 
Mine is sweet gentle and kind. He can also be a stress head and general fidgety pain in the butt. I do however trust him totally he doesnt have a bad bone in his body. He is a lovely ride can be joggy when something gets his goat but is very polite with it! he is eager to please and is a very quick learner.Love him to bits and I never liked tb's before I had him. Like others said once you bond they will do anything for you.
 
both myself and my sister have ex-racehorses and we've found them incredable rewarding and willing to learn a new job. Some can be grumpy in the stable ive found theyre often protective of food but its nothing that teaching some manners cant improve. When i got mine he was underweight and rode hollow and with his head out, now a year on I am competing him in dressage and jumping and hes doing really well :)
 
Love them! We have two, both polar opposites! The mare is 13 going on 2 and keeps me on my toes. She loves to jump (on her own terms obviously) and is completely bombproof, nothing scares her. I have had her nearly 10 years, I got her straight out of training when she was three. I had to take it one day at a time and convince her that there is more to life than galloping but shes a superstar going from jumping 65cm to discovery and last year was the regional ROR SJ winner. The Gelding is 15 and is a superstar he raced until he was 7 he wasnt castrated until late on is still an angel, he evented for several years with his previous owner until a tendon injury and after rest he went on to be a dressage diva. He came to us 2 years ago after his owner got very ill. It seemed no one wanted a exracehorse with a previous injury how wrong could they be. He has turned our lives around. My mum was very badly injured before we got him by a so called school master on trail, it ended up breaking its owner back after it went back to her (turns out it had had 8 homes in one year!!!!), Mum wasnt getting on a horse again until Rocky came in to our lives, but he has given her the confidence to not only ride again but to jump and shes even thinking about competing again. Im not saying they are all going to be great and do take a bit of time and experience readjusting to civilian life but I can tell you that the next equine addition to our family will be another ex-racehorse.
 
Mine is wonderful! I had a confidence crisis after badly breaking my leg coming off a youngster and almost gave up riding until a friend let me ride Piper. I clicked with her straight away and ended up buying her. She's quirky and sensitive but so safe and kind, she really looks after me. Sometimes I'm in awe of her, she's stunning and I tend to think " I can't ride that!" but I feel totally safe onse i'm aboard!:)
 
Hi! I have an ex racehorse, he's perfect, very laid back, bombproof, much more responsive and sensible when out hacking than the other "safe cobs" at my stable. Hell walk on, over or through anything, he is a proper trooper! The only problem I had is when I first had him he wouldn't hack out alone but after a couple of months is now completely fine. He's quite sensitive to rain rot too but other than that I can't fault him. Lives out most of the year, eats anything, gets on well with everyone and hell jump, hunt, cross country etc. he's great! They have a stigma about them for some reason but can't say enough good things about my Red!
