Sorry for self indulgence!
I have been riding an ex racer now for 2 weeks, and basically just schooling and lunging. He has begun to be more consistent working in an outline and stretching across his back.
Today however it was windy and he seemed very bored by schooling, not being naughty but didnt seem to be enjoying it, so I was brave and with my mum we hacked out down the farm drive (about half a mile) and then on the way back went into the gallops field. He threw a wobbly before we got there as another horse came out of the gallops and headed back to the yard so he wanted to follow. Then when we went onto the grass he was a star he relaxed walked in an outline and then onto the gallops again the same just looking around the field as he hasnt been there before! I even had a small trot to which he came back to me brilliantly!:D
I am so happy and hoping now that he has had that change and relax he will be all ready for his lesson on thurs!!

:D Sounds fabulous, I can totally related to the bored tb schooling!

I took a load of PC kids out on a four hour picnic ride (okay, mad cap flying round the Cotswolds ride) on my ex-racer a couple of years ago, we got to one huge field (possibly a couple of miles long) and the three hot cobs flew off at a gallop, the two ex-racers walked, trotted, canter and galloped when asked despite these cobs flying off in front of them, they did the whole field at a steady gallop, not getting any faster but eating up the ground with very little effort.

‘twas lovely :D

I always say it’s my boy’s best skill he’s always been super on grass, there is one field I always canter in and if asked he’ll still walk up it without batting an eyelid. Super horses ex-racers :D
