Ex racer. Lame again

Have had my ex racer about 5 weeks. She last raced end of September. Until I had her she had never been in a field. She left racing due to being too slow. Have had lameness issues. So ideas and thoughts appreciated please. She was turned out 3 weeks ago. Within a day she was lame quite bad. We brought her in and farrier suggested bruising. Which I tend to agree with. She then came back in. Went sound with a couple of days. She went back out Sunday. Been fine all week. My husband brought her in and she looked very slightly lame different leg from before. I dismissed it off as I notice things that are so slight. Anyway gave her her tea picked her feet the leg she seemed uneven on was swollen so got her back out picked out feet etc nothing. But now she was only just weight baring. Walked to hose pipe to wash down. Very wimpy but got better with movement. Once back in stable. Not happy to put weight on it. I feel maybe another bruise.
Has anyone had a horse that just can't cope with going out !!
 
I would get the vet out. Did you get the horse vetted before buying? being an ex racer there could be some underlying problems causing the lameness.
 
Just being turned out wouldn't cause bruises. Plus a lot of racehorses do get turnout time - mostly when on holidays.

These horses get ridden every day doing roadwork and gallop work and if the horse bruised every other day it would wear pads.

I would suggest a vet out.

I have one, when i first had her her feet were terrible!

TB's will always have some issue or another I hate to say it. Mine sometimes suffers tendon flare ups so if theyre going hell for leather around the field it could be something like that, an old injury popping its head up perhaps?

I turn mine out in old tendon boots in the days especially when the ground is hard which helps her.

Thats my experiences/methods which seem to work for mine but definatly get vet :)
 
Thanks guys. Yes obviously will get vet. She is not lame in the same leg. No she never went out before she is 3. The last time she was turned out in a field she was still with her mummy.
No digging at me please. Just constructive advice please
 
Could you contact her old owners / farrier at the yard she was on to see what might have been found before?
Investigations may have been done prior to deciding to retire her.

If she has been in all this time then out in the wet she could just be getting abscesses that can seem to come and go a bit before 'ripening'. Can you feel any heat /pulses etc?
 
Welcome to the joys of TB's and there delicate legs. I really think you need to get the vet out...none of us can give advice until you have some sort of diagnosis. If any of mine were non weight bearing a vet would be called, it could be minor or serious but without proper investigation you wont know.

Ive got a 7yo ex racer competing at PSG barefoot. sound as a pound and tough as old boots. Was shod 2yo-4yo and bare since and has never ever been lame even when his skin peeled off due to cellulitis,the sort that could have a pouring bone deep cut and still trot up sound.

my sisters ex racer was shod from 2yo-8yo but is now barefoot and was instantly 100% sound and is now competing elem.

not ALL Tb's will ALWAYS have some problem or another!!!! total rubbish, and one of the many myths that does the TB reputation no good at all.all the Tb's ive owned or teach are tough sound sorts, not wimpy in the slightest.

as many warmbloods or irish horses have rubbish feet and are prone to lameness, you cannot generalise.

OP-get a vet!
 
Have to agree with princess sparkle my tb is pretty tough although she has bruised on a stone before and was sore for a few days. If she looses a shoe she stays sound she's evented previously and never come off lame in the trot ups between events and she's had some hellish knocks jumping which I have seen other horses do and come up hopping , the only time she has been truely lame is when she reshod herself in the field and caused a huge absess. Don't judge all tbs the same, however I would get the vet it may be an absess they can cause swelling heat further up the leg. Good luck hope it works out

Totally agree with this ^^^^^

My mare does have leg problems, she has ringbone, sides bones, DJD in RF and Sidebones and Navicular in LF. She is barefoot. She should be a cripple, a field ornament at most and incapable of any kind of work. (words of the vet)

Guess what??? She is SOUND :D

She is as tough as nails, knowing there is a problem is near impossible until she is hopping lame. she hacks on all types of ground, tarmac, gravel, woodland, she is in full work hacking for 2 hours at times and currently restarting her schooling. She is 15yo in January.

Do NOT underestimate a horse just because it is a TB :p
