ex-racer showing?

I am planning to get the ex racer out showing over the summer.

Trouble is Ive only attempted showing once before and it was a disaster (was also ridden cob on the other ned so not really helping me to know how to improve for future)

So I was thinking of doing an inhand at the end of the month, and thne a ridden next month. so questions are...

What do I wear?!

Hes Bay - should I have black or brown tack, was told brown? (am buying new saddle anyway so might as well get it right!!)

I should I plait mane and tail or just mane?

should I get a jazzy brow band?

Assuming for ridden I need to put together a show? any tips?

Any other tips?

Had a really bad experience showing with the coblet, was told I did everthing wrong, judge very unhelpful (and rude!!) all ended in grown adult crying in back of trailer and wasnt pretty!! its made me really nervous and worried about getting the whole ettiquette thing wrong

Hiya, sorry for hijacking your post.. I want to do the same with my ex racer over the summer so need answers to all these questions too :p
 
regarding what to wear it depends which category your horse is ie Hack, Riding horse or hunter, If hack then navy or black jacket and hat with shirt and tie, cream or beige breeches, if riding horse or hunter then tweed jacket with black or navy hat breeches as other class. With regards to the horse brown tack is best, if a hunter then totally plain bridle no bling, if riding horse or hack then coloured browband allowed. Worth looking at pictures of past winners on SEIB racehorse to riding horse it will you ideas of presentation, but suggest you start off at local level in novice classes. You will need to walk, trot and canter round together to start and then do a short individual show, judge doesn't normally ride at novice level but will do at ROR or SEIB HOYS qualifiers. Brown tack definately, black is incorrect.

If it's riding horse type, then yes, coloured browband :)

Mane plaited, tail pulled\raked.

Keep the show simple if it's individual, walk trot canter and a change of rein plus extended canter if you feel it suitable.
If there's no individual, it will be judge ride, so make sure your neddy goes well for other people too!


Jacket for riding horse, should be navy I *think*. If hunter type, then tweed jacket and no coloured browband, plain, flat caveson :)
 
Type,height, movement and conformation :)

Generally just from looking at the horse you can dcide :)

Just one more tack related question, bridles - should it be a cavasson nose band or flash? Ive been told snaffle bit, can I use anyothers (am riding him in dutch gag at moment) also martingales and breat plates, on or not?

If it is ex racer club stuff then you can show in what tack your horse needs so flash etc If it is tarra/ror etc then it really needs to be a snaffle/pelham/double with a cavesson noseband. Its normally tweed jacket for riding horse and hunter and navy for hack classes. Like people have said most shows will be individual show and its only the RIHS and HOYS qualifiers that get judge rides - I am currently trying to wean myhorse on to other people for this reason. Good luck though - every ex racer class I have done the judges have been so friendly and helpful and they give loads of hints/tips etc so just ask them after your class if there is anything that they would change so you know whether you are on the right track :)

No flash, for hunters it should be a plain flat caveson, no flash attatchment.
Bit wise, you can away with a snaffle at local level, but for any higher, a double is more 'correct' even though it says snaffles are allowed.

No martingales or breastplates, unless doing a worker type class which you'll be allowed for the jumping but has to be taken off for your show class.

Sorry they're not great photos. We're planning to do local shows and see how it goes :) Not sure if her conformation is good.. I think she is a little over at the knee? I'm not great at conformation though!

I have just started doing these classes this year. Charlie is shown as a riding club horse and has so far been placed 2nd at both shows that we have done. At local level, I have found the judges to be more than happy to give advice and they have been very friendly. I was very nervous before our first show, but found that I really enjoyed the class and look forward to doing more similar classes
 
I would suggest going as a small riding horse, i.e. a coloured browband and a tweed jacket. If you only have a blue (or even black jacket) then wear that and don't worry about it. If your horse is going nicely and has good conformation, then the colour of your jacket will not matter.

One last question.. what is her confo like? Do you think she will do ok in showing? (I'm currently building up her muscle and adding a little bit more weight). We're only planning to do local comps, as she is in training to do BE next year so that's the main priority.

She'll be absolutely fine local level I wouldn't worry too much :) Just work on bulking her up a bit, topline, hind quarters, etc :) Unsure if she has any nicks or blemishes on her, but just make sure they're concealed and covered over too if there are any anywhere :)

You NEVER change tack after the jumping section of a working hunter class. The only thing that must be taken off is boots, if your horse wears them for jumping. Martingales etc must remain on until the class has been judged and rosettes handed out. You can change your hat from a strap hat to a beagler type if you prefer and change your jumping whip to a cane. But the actual tack must not be changed.
