Ex Racers - Ad lib Haylage

Are Ex Racers normally fed more hard feed and less haylage

Ruby does'nt seem to eat that much haylage, but loves her hard feed. Half her haylage is tramped into her bed in a morning - did'nt know weather to up her hard feed, but she is looking and behaving fine at the mo. which is why I am hesitating changing anything.

But don't like to waste haylage



Shes on 1 stubbs scoop of top spec cond flakes, 1 scoop calm and condition handful herbal chaff with the Benevit stuff morning and evening oh and carrots, she Loves carrots!

I have two different types of haylage at the moment one smells really rich more traditional haylage and the other is more like meadow hay .Im really surprised that my two tbs prefer hay (meadow) and are leaving the haylage.Perhaps she would prefer something lighter even so she looks in great shape .I use calm and condition too but with alpha a
 
My girlie is more a hard feed then haylage horse, she tends to waste alot. I have changed her from haylage to hay and then back again, but she is still the same. As for carrots, my girl loves them too. also on Calm and Condition, with Graze on, soya oil and garlic.......
 
If she is out in the day,could it be that the grass is coming through a bit and she is just not hungry for the haylage?
My lad is out 24 hours now and left a load of his haylage last night and its the same bale he has been gobbling up forthe past couple of days.
she looks fabulous and if her behaviour is fine then I would be loathe to up the feed.

I lurve calm and condition, I rave about it to everyone. It really does seem to suit TB's
 
How long has she been out of training for? Most racers are only used to a tiny amount of hay/ haylage (compared to a domestic horse). Even years later some of them won't eat very much..... my 2 yo eats twice as much haylage as my 8yo ex racer!!!
I've found that generally racers are soft mouthed and prefer soft hay/ haylage etc
 
Mine isn't a big hay eater but gets a bit silly on a full quota of haylege so he gets 2 sections of hay ,one sectionof haylege, a big bucket of good doer and a brick. Everything is normally gone in the morning and he is still getting his fibre

I picked her up from a racing yard last July, so not that long.

she is definitely soft mouthed, and her 'mouthful' of haylage generally consists of 4 of 5 strands at a time!!

She is not out during the day just yet, they had a sand turnout area, then I just take her for half an hour of grass in hand after work. They will be out soon.

Am definitely loathed to up the feed, spend a minimum of £50 a month as it is, and don't want to alter her behaviour!
 
Give her time, I've always found that they do start to eat more eventually, she's not used to eating huge amounts of haylage but she'll soon get the hang of it. My lot were all the same, now a days they can demolish a bale pretty quick!
