ex racers - Do trainers/owners want to know what the horse is doing now?

Well as a breeder I want to know. I will also take them back if they need a place after racing. I know where all mine are but I can honestly tell you that some owners, a small amount, don't give a hoot. I'm talking from experience of one group of owners that I'd like to shove under a bus. At any rate yes I want to know. FWIW have had good success with my racehorses although none were superstars, but I gave up on breeding because I couldn't cope with selling to people that really weren't what they said they were. Ie, pretending to care about the horse first.

Hey, i wrote to my sisters ex racers trainer, david nicholls, about 7 months ago and havent heard anything at all from him and i have.no idea how to get in touch with his owner. I would have loved to know more about him but oh well.

Xx

Fig won a bit of money and was reasonably successful - his previous owner enjoys sporadic updates and has requested that we keep in touch. I recently contacted a past trainer who was super pleased to hear and see how he was getting on, and also asked for future updates. His breeder acknowledged my email, but showed no further interest.

I think the lads and lasses are more interested in how they get on as they nostkly looked after them on a day to day basis. I know I'm in contact with a few people who had racers from where I worked and it is really nice to see how they are getting on.

Vaya - No, she was just a number
J - Yes
Red - Yes
Charlie - No, just a number (well Heros are interested but i'm 100% sure his old trainers/owners/breeders wouldnt' care less).

It's got to be worth a shot, the worst that can happen is they chuck the letter in the bin. The best is that they write back :D.

When I got my boy I emailed Henrietta Knight to tell her I had him. I got a lovely email back from her and she commented on what a ' nice person' he was. I know that she judges ROR classes and so hope one day she will meet us in the showring!

Just an update for anyone who wondered how i got on . . .

I wrote 5 weeks ago and so far no reply :-(

Not to worry though, their loss, my gain!

Aw thats a shame, but yes! I've also found it's the lasses who looked after them who cared the most :).

I contacted our boys trainer. He only raced once though so i didn't hold out much hope of hearing anything back - which i didn't! Thought it was worth a try though as would have liked to have seen pics of him training. Managed to get his race dvd though so seen him as a racer and seen why he didn't cut the mustard!! :D

Mine has been out of racing about 10 years but the trainer's secretary keeps in touch and has photos each year as her dad really liked him. I work in racing and one or two other people who worked at the yard but are now trainers in their own right have asked about him as they know I have him. I found out quite a bit about him from one of them as she used to do him when he was a 2 year old.

Some very nice stories in this thread.

Of my two boys, one was trained on a big name yard, and one by a lady trainer who had just 5 horses in at any one time... they are both in regular touch by email and are (by all accounts!) delighted to hear progress updates - the big name yard featured my update in their quarterly newsletter, and the first time we took the other boy to a show his old trainer came to watch (just an in hand class!) and cried with happiness!
