I'm currently on the list for the Darley Rehoming Centre to take on one of their ex racers. Would love to hear peoples stories about their ex racers, maybe even people who have rehome from Darley themselves? Not 100% sure about the process when i get a call from them. massively excited, but trying to remember that it could take months to find the 'right' one for me!

I had an exracer, EX Nh and P2P.
He was the best horse Ive ever had. He was brillient to hack, brillient to ride, obviously not exactly dressage material as he racer for ten years. He taught me a hell of a lot.

He taught me that nothing in this world is free.

He had a lot of underlying health issues and was sadly PTS on 4th may this year due to lymphangitis.

Would I have another? Yes. without a shadow of a doubt!

I've had several racers straight from the trainer. They've all been good to hack, in traffic, shoe, load, clip, etc, etc and with only one exception have had manners to burn.
PF has been with me for 8 years. She's a bit spooky when fresh, but otherwise is a perfect lady. And she jumps beautifully as well

AND she's given me 2 beautiful foals

first one was called munchcin he was an absolute sait he was safe as houses and the best little man to do in every way he got sold to an older lady as he looked after everyone so well.
second was toby still got him and altho its such hard work to keep weight on him he has made an excellent hunter & is such a star!!
third one was harry who was sold to me as 'sharp' he definatly was he could buck but he turned out to be such a lovely boy and a star he is now eventing and doing really really well! he was one of the best looking horses i ever
sold

i buy all my racers straight of the track/ trainer but if they had none i would go to a centre!

i wish you the bestest luck and they are possibly the most forgiving kind natured horses ive ever worked with!

I dont own one but am currently retraining an ex national hunt horse (national favouite 2007) and he is fab. One of the nicest horses I have met and actually is showing promise a dressage pony (extremely trainable and good paces).
He is like an old shoe to hack and his owner is actually learning to ride on him (only on the lead rein at the moment but he is still very good). He is 12 now and has been out of acing for about 18months but you would never think he had been a race horse.
I would consider having one myself after him. Most of the people I have met who have had ex racers have had positive experiences.

I'm really pleased to hear good experiences. I have some people in my life telling me i'm totally insane! I am slightly worried about keeping weight on him over winter but i'll just have to see how he is once i get him.

Have had my Darley boy about 5 months now and am still very pleased with him. I think they do try to match their horses to the right person and you get to try the horse in the school and on a hack. Also, you can phone them at any time if you have any problems.
My boy had a year off with a tendon and was absolutely super to hack intially. Now that he's much fitter, he's also got a bit sharper, spooking at things and jumping all over the place but I think he will settle again.
Has nice paces and starting to work very nicely in the school now. Took him out for a walk and trot test about a month ago and that was the only problem I've had so far, he got EXTREMELY wound up! Hoping that he'll get used to it with time.
He's easy to handle and has a very affectionate temperament but can be very cheeky!

I also have another x racer that I bought privately, he was very nappy when I first had him but is now good to hack alone and competes at novice dressage. Also very easy to handle and nice temperament.

Don't let people put you off, TB's are no different from other breeds, you can get good ones and bad ones.
Darley only rehome horses that will be suitable as riding horses so you won't end up with a complete nutcase!

wow, now i'm seriously looking forward to getting my call.

Delta99 - How long did you have to wait till they rang you? I kinda figured it would be about a year?

Mine came direct from the trainer, I love him to death, he's a really honest little horse and has such a mature head on his shoulders for a five year old!

Weight can be an issue, he was very skinny when we got him but he is now fed as much hayledge as he can eat (and then some) day and night and is on build up mix and sugar beet in his hard feed, plus a suppliment for his stomach just in case.

He's putting on weight nicely and I'm fully armed with a collection of rugs for winter although I'm now paranoid about over rugging as I nearly cooked him in a thermatex last weekend
