I have a gorgeous ex racer called Basil who came to me over 2 months ago. He is very active in the garden and has lost weight due to the amount of space and freedom he now has. I have put him on a diet of kibble ( yora) rather expensive insect feed but I’ve just realised that it has 24% protein with may account for the fact that he is not gaining weight. He poos around 3 times a day. Does anyone have advice/ experience of a lower grain free feed which promotes weight . My previous greyhounds were raw fed but I fear my English bull terrier with her ‘special needs’ skin and vet diet may take offence!

I’m concerned about him dropping more weight on raw and having far too much protein during his transition. Because he is so active and neurotic he burns energy so efficiently but if it’s the best for him I would certainly go for it.

Try a firm like Red Mills or Gain which makes food specifically for racing and resting greyhounds.
A lot of the time raw food/raw mixes actually have less of a percentage of protein than dry food.

Also bear in mind he's a hound ;)

I have always fed Millies Wofheart alert mix, slightly lower protein, grain free and chicken free and high fat content

I fed my greyhounds all sorts over the 20+ years I had them - raw, Skinners Duck and Rice, Arden Grange…..

I wouldn’t bother with a specialist greyhound food personally, they are usually designed for dogs in training not retired ones. Any decent-ish quality food should be fine 😊

ETA - I love the name Basil 🤣

My new greyhound also lost weight when I first had him. He is on Markus Muhle dry with Forthglade Just trays as topper. I was feeding him a quantity I extrapolated from the quantities I feed the lurchers who look great on it. It turns out he needs quite a bit more food proportionately than they do. He has now put on weight and is thriving. He gets it spread over three meals as well which I had never done before as the lurchers were happy with two meals a day. He is very settled and laid back on this regime.

My big whippets, affectionately known as the whoppets, need more food than any one ever thinks they do. They are 17 and 20kgs and get between 2 and 3% of their bodyweight in raw food. When they had grain free dry I let them free feed and they would snack all the time, the oldest got up in the night most nights to have a 3am snack. They looked fantastic on either regime.

If they are whippets, then it makes sense for them to be called the whippets.
I’m assuming a predictive text change!
Good luck with your hound, OP.
