the top pic was a couple of days after we bought him home, the second was a month later.

i do think it is cruel to not control your horse's weight. they don't really have any control over it themselves (see food = eat food), and immagine having to carry around all those extra pounds, not no mention the serious health problems it can cause.

ETS; that wasn't directed at you, yours doesn't look too bad

..that a bit of exercise will soon sort him out - I've seen worse, and improved it beyond recognition.

the saddle is completely the wrong shape for him - I hope it was just there to introduce him to the concept

Can I add another one? In the case of obese mares, their teats are so swollen with fat, at first glance they can appear to be boys. It happened to us this summer with a cob mare that came to stay recovering from a bout of laminitis (friend of a friend scenario). Sadly she never recovered and had to be PTS, which was a great shame as she was a lovely lovely sweet kind mare who was incredibly grateful for all the attention she received whilst she stayed with us.

its verging on obese but i think with a bit of exercise could lose the belly quite easily, neck isnt too cresty so doesnt look like its been like this a long time. How old is she?

I was at a yard a number of years ago where someone had 3 obese horses and I'm not just talking a bit podgy. She rode one of them so that one at least got exercise.

She did love her horses they were well cared for but overfed - alot. One of them was so huge (makes the ponies in these pictures look normal sized) that it couldn't move in the end and had to be put to sleep.
