What can I do to help my young chap to lift his back toes? He does only drag in trot. Also I would like to build on is muscles this year (all over, but particularly on his backend) - any suggestions? We don't have a school (just able to ride in the field when weather has been kind to us!) so would like to be able to do excerses out on a hack - I guess transistions are a good one... anything else?

I personally would hack up as many hills as possible to build up his back end, both in walk and trot.
I am unsure if it would help but have you tired raised trotting poles in the field, it will make him pick his legs up a bit more and maybe he will then pick up a bit more on a hack?

Hills, walk and trot up walk down but dont over work
Leg yielding across road and back in walk--as long as very quiet road of course
In the field walk over poles--initially on the ground then lifted alternately at opposite ends
Make small obstacle courses for leading in hand, in and out of cones, over poles etc
He needs to find out where his feet are
Chat with farrier it may help to increase break over by lightly rolling toes
Do carrot stretches in stable to increase suppleness

I would try to find out why he is dragging his toes. Also you could ask your farrier for advice re shoeing him differently

if he checks out ok with the vet / farrier try trotting poles, hill work and weighted brushing boots (ebay £20) worked wonders on my lazy youngster !

Yep would definately try hill work - he may still drag his toes going back down, but if you make him walk really slowly downhill it does help (I find singing "tiptoe through the tulips in a really lazy manner" is about the right downhill pace LOL). Also would mention to farrier to see if he could suggest anything. Mine's in natural balance and it's made a big difference.
