Excess Acid/Ulcers/Cribbing

Hi,

My horse is very healthy and after having ulcers and being treated at the end of last year he is now clear. However he cribs badly, in his stable and in the field, if i stop him he looks so uncomfortable so i have electric around the fences and a cribbing post in the filed. If he cant crib when he eats he is very uncomfortable too, im not sure if its habit from years of trying to calm the ulcers or something still isnt right. Any ideas? He is fed top spec lite balancer, simple systems lucie pellets, alfa a molasses free. I have now put him on Protexin acid ease but im not sure how much that will help.
 
I can't help, but am interested in replies - my friend's horse (my horse's main companion) is currently mid way through a course of GastroGuard, but he's still windsucking and burping at every meal time and looks quite uncomfortable. I wonder if sometimes Gastroguard on its own just doesn't deal with all the problems. This particular horse seemed to do well with high doses of Gaviscon dual action, but how long is it even feasible to keep feeding that?
 
That's interesting. Gaviscon has sodium alginate,sodium bicarbonate and calcium carbonate. His Protexin has that, I have just seen Ulcer Calm by Feedmark is cheaper and has the same ingredients. I have discussed with the vet and any change or he seems a bit grumpy we are going to put him on a maintenance dose of Peptizole. £19.99 a tube that will last 4/5 days and see how he goes. It's very frustrating. I was hoping others had any options or experiences. X

Hi Jo. Not sure if you knew that ulcer calm from feedmark is on buy one get one free at the mo!
 
Hi, mines currently on gastroguard 1/4 of a tube per day, succeed and brewers yeast and finally I have a happy horse. After his scope and being given the all clear I had his hind gut tested for ulcers. Test is a little hit and miss but he did test postive. After 2 months of treatment he no longer has constant diarrhoea! Yay!!
I couldn't say him the succeed or brewers yest has worked better but the brewers yeast is amount 5 times cheaper than succeed!
Have you thought about buying the raw ingredients and making your own mix?
 
I went through something similar. Every horse is individual but for mine the following worked. I removed all alfalfa from his diet. (Had already eliminated cereals and molasses) it made a surprising difference. I fed yeasacc to support his hind gut. For a few months I syringed 200ml of pure aloe vera juice into his mouth (this tip I got from one of the racehorse re homing centres that obv can't afford gastroguard). Finally he was never left without ad lib hay when stabled. It was like someone had swapped him for a different horse!

Thats interesting ghostie... Ive just added alfa to my mares feed after reading alot about it being a natural acid buffer. She has also been having a large handful of it before working to supposedly prevent acid splash. What made you deciede to remove alfa?
