Sorry for the not very nice nature but J has had excess saliva (and by excess I mean it is falling out of his mouth when he is standing still).

It started last Thursday but I did think because I had started to give him some of his sectioned field it was because he had eaten a fair bit of grass.

Its been on and off all weekend, where he stands and it just falls out of his mouth, or he starts chewing and it all comes out. Normally when he comes in from the field.

He isn't interested in hay when tied up but he has eaten his soaked hay overnight and is eating his hard feed (a handful of chaff with his supplements).

He had some loose poops Sunday morning when I hacked out but it wasn't too bad and he always has a poop when we leave the driveway so didn't think much of it.

This morning he had what can only be described as poop water coming out of him, he did it twice in 20 mins. The saliva was also really present again this morning and he coughed twice which is unlike him.

I took his temp and it was normal but he does seem a bit quiet.

I've called the vet to see if they can call me back. Do you think its just the grass that's causing him to feel full etc.

Jesus Christ seriously?

Right I'm calling them again now. He does have a lot of buttercups in his field unfortunately. Thank you all

That’s good the vet has been out, we have had an issue in the past with clover in the field causing excess salivation, might be worth having a really good scan of what is in your field also. I hope he’s feeling much better soon.

Thanks all. Vet doesn't think its choke, colic or grass sickness.

Fingers crossed we get some answers and he feels better soon. We are meant to move yards on Saturday :(

As someone mentioned above, worth checking for red clover. There’s a fungus which grows on it and causes slobbers in horses (delightful name, no?). Usually more common in North America I think, but I was on a yard a couple of years ago where all the horses in one field had it. For about a month, anything that got into that field came in with a mouth like a tap.

The horse will be absolutely fine, but do make sure they’re well-hydrated. The biggest annoyance was the amount of bedding they went through!

He is eating and drinking.
Just so you know, horses with chronic grass sickness can eat and drink and some do recover. There was a post stating that he dropped food and saliva from his mouth so not exactly eating normally.

Dyllymoo I am pleased the vet has been able to rule some things out including grass sickness. Sending you a cyber hug.

Thanks but I have nursed a horse through chronic grass sickness. The saliva starts dripping from their mouth when they are unable to swallow it.

Thanks all. Bloods have shown absolutely nothing. Vet will be giving me a call this morning to discuss how he is (pretty much the same minus the diarrhoea). I've checked his field and there is no clover in there. I didn't think there was but thought it worth checking. He had been in that field the whole 8 months I have had him, and my previous horse was in there for 3 years with no issues.

I just wanted to add he hasn't been "dropping food" so I wasn't concerned about that, but he has excess saliva.

Its all a bit weird. Just wish he would feel better as he is quite quiet in himself, not completely, and he trotted off across the field to the nice new patch of grass this morning, but he isn't his cheeky self that's for sure.

I missed him actually drawing but he had been in 10 mins and just stood still and then it all came out (on the floor).

He did eat his hay after this and his dinner

I have dentist (who is a vet but now specialises as a dentist) coming next Tuesday (earliest appointment)

There’s nothing that could have been sprayed on any neighbouring fields could there? We used to have a farmer that sprayed so close to our hedge line that spray used to go into our paddocks.

Nope. He is surrounded by our yards fields and nothing has touched them.

I'm going to check under his tongue tomorrow for grass seeds. Hopefully if he cooperates!
