I have just taken an elderly Staffie on trial (age 12). Lovely dog and my dogs and cat really get on well with him. I notice he drinks a lot of water (far more than my big dogs)and his fosterer said the same. I have him on grain free dried food.

I will obviously take him to the vets and ask for bloods, but I was wondering if it is often a sign of diabetes or cushings and if there was anything I could do to help him in the meantime? He does have mild cataracts.

He doesn't seem to be in any distress at all.

Thanks

When my beagle reached a certain age he drank a lot. All the bloods came back clear, but it can indicate (as you've said) cushings/diabetes/kidney issues. I would just ensure he has plenty to drink and take him to the vets tomorrow.

What a lovely thing to do, a vet is certainly your next port of call, is it possible to measure how much he is drinking in a day to give your vet an idea of his daily intake? Some dogs do drink a lot, we used to have a farm Collie who was obsessed with it but she was 100% healthy and it was just her .

Please take him to the vets, my beautiful boy Bruce started drinking a lot of water last year but other than that was in good health. Vets first thought was diabetes but turned out to be bone cancer. He died in December aged 13 after chemo didn't work. It may be nothing as sinister and could just be that he is better on wet food but best to check it out

I'm sorry to hear about Bruce. How sad.
No, he isn't on medication Thistle. We got to see the vet today and thankfully she gave him a clean bull of health. Apart from a prokalm paste to settle his tum given diet changes, he was pronounce din really good health and a lovely friendly dog. He weighed in at 16.1kg and made friends with everyone there, bless him.

I will continue to keep an eye on his water intake though in case it gets worse.

He cant half snore though!!

Good news, I have a 7 yr old staffy girl, she is petite at around 15kg, lovely dog. She lives with a lab and a springer pup, also just recently lost a boxer.

Glad to hear he's got the all clear, and what a lovely thing to do to take on an older dog, will he be your nanny dog?!

My dog loves water, and can't pass a bowl without having a drink (and then dribbling it everywhere) I haven't had it specifically checked out, but he's been to the vets a fair bit and has been the same for the last 3 years and is fine. I think he wants to rescue the water - I tried to shower him once and he spent the whole time trying to desperately rescue it all from going in the plughole.....

He's a large dog and gets hots easily (lots of coat!) so I think its probably just down to that

Stencil face...re that blocked plug hole....I've just bought a metal disc, fine holes all over ,that just sits on the drain hole....what a great job it does to strain the loose hairs from my schnauzers bath water ...I bath after a strip, and there are always some hairs ready to block the drains. I bought this at the DIY.

Could be thyroid. Ask for a blood test for him. My older Stafford drinks loads and this is due to her thyroid. Reduced the medication this time round and her drinking has increased so back to the higher dosage next time.

Oh and a BIG thank you for taking on not only an older dog but an older Stafford. They are hugely hard to rehome and don't often make it out of kennels.

This is Diesel Dog. He is lovely. Took him out for lunch today and then a walk around the reservoir with my other two. He is so well behaved.

He also had a bath this morning, so a busy day and now he is snoozing on the sofa. I fostered a little staffie a while ago for a charity but she was injured due to long term neglect and had to be pts after a couple of weeks I was gutted as they are a fabulous breed. I was made up when I was able to adopt Diesel (he is cat friendly so fits in brilliantly with the rest of the fur balls we have).

I cant seem to get the picture to load, only the code. Can anyone help?

He is a handsome chap - well done. As our dogs get older they all seem to drink more, you notice it when the old one goes and you don't fill up the bowl so much. :-(

Thanks for posting the pic Clodagh. He is a character Thistle. He has already worked his way onto our bed, lol. My OH swore that wouldn't happen, and he was the one that invited him upstairs!

Make sure they do a FULL panel test for thyroid....not what they normally do in the UK.. Look at the various Jean Dodds websites in the USA for further info if you require it. I've had a dog now that two vets (including referral centre) in the UK insisted had not problems but JD proved otherwise. Said dog is now doing absolutely fine! :)

Don't get hung up on thyroid though...could be other things, or could be sod all! :D
