Hi all

I got my new mare a few weeks ago and she came with nothing, so I have had to start from scratch with all tack etc.

She was rode in a jointed loose ring bit when I tried her out but this wasnt hers, she basically used what was around at the time.

I had a jointed eggbutt which I tried her in but she tended to lean alot and it was slightly too big for her, so I bought her a loose ring happy mouth with a centre roller (a friend advised to try her in this).

I rode her in the happy mouth at the weekend but only on a half hour hack (couldn't get in arena to try it schooling). After about 5 mins her mouth was covered in white foam. I have been reading around on the internet and some people are saying this is good, others are saying this is a way of her telling me she is disliking the bit.

She was a bit full of her self and was all sweated up from returning from the hack if that will have anything to do with it??

Also if I need to try her in something else do you have any recommendations ?

Thanks for your help :)

Yeah well a little bit of "foam" is ok but excessive froth is definitely not. Sound like she has been unable to swallow properly with the new bit.

Have you looked at her mouth conformation? It sounds like it's too thick for her.

It may be yes, difficult to get a good look with the bit in her mouth as she is a little head shy

Shes a irish sports horse and seems to have the TB head so will have the narrow mouth

Yes too much is bad. As above, it sounds like she couldnt swallow properly in the new bit.

If I've understood right, she was fine in a loose ring, but leant in the eggbutt? If she was happy in what she originally had in I would just buy the same!

Is it quite thick in her mouth? I have found quite a few horses seem uncomfortable with the 'normal' thickness of bit (especially rubber etc) so better in something thinner that sits more comfortably. Mine has a French link bradoon which is the same but marginally thinner for use with a double. You can get thinner than that, obviously it concentrates any pressure so can be more 'sharp'.
