excessive in the extreem

my horse drank four buckets of water when she came in this morning - is this normal??? lazy ned, by the gate most of the time, can't be bothered to walk down to stream methinks. she never drinks and then suddenly its like woooo need five buckets!!

how big are the buckets! i think the norm is 6 gallons, but i could be wrong.... my lad was drinking nearly on 25 gallons in 24 hours for weeks, blood tests and urine sample, but he was fine... so nothing to worry about i would say,

If horse hasn't been drinking during the day, 4 normal-sized buckets is normal, especially if it's been hot.
Heck, PF regularly chugs down a whole bucket after exercise, and she's got water on hand (on hoof?) all day.

I wouldn't say excessive as everyone else has said. But is the stream okay and clean. I mean people haven't been putting all sorts of cr*p in it and the horses won't drink it? Just a thought.

I would check upstream as something would be putting your horse off.
