I am a very experienced rider and have had some really good horses over the years and my current horse is no exception but she really needs more work than I can give her and with winter around the corner I will only be able to ride at week ends, like most people really. She goes out every day and her food ration is sensible for what she does but hacking out will be a frustration as she finds it a buzz at the best of times.

As I haven't had my mare very long and all things considered I really dont think she is the right horse for me now at my time of life so I am considering exchanging her for a horse that is twice her age but has been there, seen it done it and would be suitable for anybody to ride. There will be a small cash sum involved.

I am feeling a bit guilty about the situation as I haven't sold a horse for years. All my others have ended their days with me which makes it even harder really. She would be going to a professional dealer who I know would sell her on to a suitable
home etc.

Would any of you do the same?

I have always brought my horses for life,so fully understand what you mean.....most likely it will be best all round for both of you!
Would the cash sum involved be to your advantage?

Hi, well it sounds as though you are doing the right thing.
I can't actually believe what i am reading as i have been thinking the same thing but i am looking for something to do a bit more with and maybe sell my girl or put her in foal, i never thought of an exchange.
Pm me if you like

Yes- I did it- swapped a maniac horse who needed riding daily for an older schoolmaster- still gets a bit of a giddy on, but doesnt need riding every day.....much less stressful, especially as I have a hubby, 2 kids and a full time job to fit in also (as well as OH's horse and daughters pony to look after)....

don't feel guilty, gotta do whats right for you, I'm sure she will go to the right home...

Don't be silly. Horses cost a huge amount of money and time. if she is not the right horse for you, it is better for both of you, that you exchange her for something you can enjoy and hopefully she will find a more busy and interesting life.

I don't chop and change horses, generally I get them and they end their days with me, but I have bought two horses that were not right for me. One was mis-sold and I sent him back after 3 weeks. The other I had for a year, I stopped riding her after 6 months because she scared me. I sold her via a dealer and got something else that I have had for 7 years. She wasn't a bad horse, just not the right one for me.

Phew thanks guys. It's true, I, like all of you spend alot of my time and money on my horses and all I really want to do is a bit of everything at low key level now with the minimum of fuss. It's a shame really as my mare is very beautiful but as the saying goes, handsome is as handsome does.........now to contact that dealer again.

Dont feel guilty. Go with your gut feeling. Better to possibly regret selling her, than to regret keeping her after an accident happens. Very best of luck, I think a lot of us know how you feel x
