Yesterday I bought a turnout rug. It was reduced end of winter stock then along with everything else in store had an extra 20% off over the weekend.
Tried it on this morning and its too small, went back with receipt and ask to swap for a larger size....
Them...Sorry not for that price you have to pay the extra 20%
Me........Really? That's rediculous Its a straight swap surely?
Them....No it will mess up our stock levels- it would be the same price if you swap for the same size...
Me....but its the size thats wrong Umm that's the craziest thing I've heard
Them...I will get the manager but she will only say the same thing!

Eventually after much consideration they swapped for a larger size.
Who was right? Surely I was?! (If not I seriously should have been!)

IIRC then there is no legal reason why they have to give you an exchange unless the goods are actually faulty which I imagine the rug wasn't?

However as you say, it does seem a little ott for them to refuse in this instance but maybe it really could mess their system up.

Yeah as above its up to them whether to refund or exchange. However if they hadn't of swapped I'd vote with my feet and not use them again

If the extra 20% off offer was running over the weekend only then no, they dont have to swop rug for larger size at same price. most stores would do it though to offer good customer service and repeat custom. :)

No you werent right they were, legally Im afraid they are totally in the right.
You didnt have the right to return or exchange unless goods are faulty (this applies even to non sale stuff too). It is purely retailer goodwill if they do.

If they do exchange, then it would be entirely goodwill gesture or due to the shops policy.

Most shops go well above what they need to do when someone returns an item. If the item is faulty/not fit for purpose then they should refund/replace the item. If however, as you had done, purchase the wrong size & there is nothing wrong with the item then they have no legal obligation to change the item for you. Due to the fact they want to retain you as a future customer & want to encourage others to come to their shop & maintain good customer relations they have given you the exchange you wanted, but you were not entitled to it.
