Well as some of you may know Maggie's owner wants her back fulltime now she has had her baby. So i have been looking around and found a Gelderland kept 5mins down the road!!

I'm very excited and hopefully going to see her this weekend/ next weekend.

Does anyone else have a Gelderland? What are they like?

Gelderlander.

They are predominantly carriage horses aren't they? A local man has a team of four he used to take out in his carriage regularly. The ones I have seen are usually chestnut or black with lots of white. They seem very placid with quite an action to them, very kindly and gentle.

Obviously a big generalisation, but a quick google serach will also give you an overview of the breed.

Best Luck xx

My old chestnut in my siggie was a Gelerlander X, he had had a horrible time before i got him so he had a crappy attitude to most people. That aside he was a pleasure to keep, and a joy to ride. Took a while to master his HUGE trot, and never quite managed to master sitting trot

Hope you like her, good luck

They are bred as carriage horses but generally have a nice teprament and make decent riding horses. Their head carriage is naturally high so stressage isn't an easy thing to master but they can do it!

Well it sounds like i should be having some fun then!! The owner sounds lovely and is asking me to pay for the shoes in return for unlimited riding. Good deal if you ask me!

The horse has done a bit of everything, i will post some pics up if i decide to go with her xx

there is Gelderlander competeing dressage at PSG called Mr President, he is black with white markings, so they certainly seem to be a multi talented horse

hope you have lots of fun

I used to have two on loann. Fantastic horses, not plods but generally not flighty. The high head carriage can take a bit of getting used to, but they are very comfy with lovely paces.

Ive got a gelderlander, ive had him for almost 9 years now. He was a driving horse (at the age of 3!) hes now an advanced medium dressage horse and doing really well!

They can be quite sharp, Gelderlanders are bred for their movement, not their brains!! They are mega sensitive and can get quite blocked in their necks and backs due to their high head carriage so lots of streching/neck flexions helps.

Good luck!

I have a Gelderlander, Cappy, he is 17-2ish, I would disagree with StinkiPinki, mine is the most intelligent horse I have ever met. He is a problem solver. He has a lovely nature, but being a warmblood he is inclined towards stressyness. He is a lovely, if somewhat exciting ride. Mine was also a driving horse that I bought and had retrained to be ridden. However, he is sharp and can be nappy. On the ground he is gentle and kind. I have been told he is pretty typical of the breed by someone breeds them. The Dutch warmbloods are bred from them.

George Bowman drives them.

My old yard owner has a couple - one is competing at Prix St. Georges! Lovely horses, great temperament. I haven't ridden one but they look like they have lovely action.
