One of the loaners on my yard has sadly stopped part loaning her mare and the owner asked if I wanted to take up the ride of her! I have a great relationship with the owner and she knew how much I’ve missed having fun on horses.

I had a lesson yesterday - the instructor knows the mare inside out so it was really valuable. I didn’t ride to my best and over thought my riding a lot, but in my defence, I’ve barely ridden in over 3 years. I really enjoyed her and I’m so excited to get cracking with her.

She’s a 12 year old welsh sec d (I’ve not ridden anything with an engine like hers in about 7 years!) and super sweet. Like a lot of natives, her go-to is putting in minimum effort but once you get her moving, she is incredible and I could tell why she’s done so well in flat showing classes.

My main goal with her is to just get to know her and have lots of fun with her. The part loaner had a big confidence knock with jumping her a few years ago that never really went away, so she’s not one I can get on and jump round a 90cm with as she’s the sensitive type so it affected her confidence too. But I am more than happy starting small and starting slow.

I’m just so grateful to have something I can enjoy and go to arena hires with.

Shadow is obviously my priority and he’s doing well. I’m back on board next week but it’s going to be a long process of going really slowly with him.
