Just recieved insurance certificate for our new horse. He is about to turn 3, so obviously not backed, and never been lunged, so we went for the 2 stage vetting. He passed, the vet was not concerned about anything, but his feet hadn't been trimmed for ages and the vet noted that he had thrush in one foor, cracks in both hind feet, and one slightly boxy foot. All of these comments were deemed 'of no clinical significance with correct farriery' and the vet actually told previous owner that she really ought to have had his feet better trimmed before vetting.
Anyway, his policy has just come back, excluding ALL FOUR FEET! Now this seems ridiculous to me, as he has no history of any problems, and the vet said no reason that he should in the future. Is there any point at all in me phoning them? He has now had his feet trimmed and we have treated the thrush....is it ever possible to get an exclusion like this lifted? And will this exclude the 'inside' of his feet - eg if he ever gets navicular etc? TBH if it does I am tempted to cancel the insurance and put the £40 a month into a savings account instead! I mean how many of horses problems involve at lest investigating the feet!!! Gah!

I'd understand them excluding the boxy foot although vet said whould never cause any problems, but excluding for thrush?!
Any advice/opinions would be gratefully recieved!

Yes contest it. Ask your vet to write a report stating that it doesn't affect him and that with correct farriery, it will come right. IME insurers usually back down when your vet supports you (mine did anyway!).

I would absolutely be contesting it - get on the phone first thing!

Definitely get on the phone! What you may find is that they will agree to lift the exclusions a year into the policy.
When I bought my youngster at 20 months I had him 2 stage vetted, the vet noted a small splint and slight filling in the pasterns - KBIS excluded any conditions arising from these but when I phoned them they said they would lift the exclusions after a year if they hadn't caused a problem (and they did remove them).

Interesting thanks both. N, thats probably a good bet, I can get vet to write a letter next time he comes out as well though.
Thanks all, will call them first thing!

OMG - that does seem a bit harsh! Would try to get it lifted even though the b*ggers didn't lift my exclusion on horse holding tail slightly to left, even though vet said it was of no significance and I protested! Funny how they accept that everything the vet says is OK actually is OK!!

Get very worked up over insurance from time to time but still carry on paying!! just as well this year, 2 horsies having surgery!!

sm153....what did they exclude?! His tail? Bizarre isn't it. Will be on phone to them first thing tomorrow.

Get on the phone!
I had an excusion put on mine ... anything attached to the spine (all for a pulled muscle)! I contacted them and asked if they were kidding 'no' was the first response but as I pointed out they had exculed the whole horse they had a re-think. I had to get my vet to sent them a letter & they changed it to just the injury.
