Not that I have anything against the riding school pupils. They are with one exception, charming, well-behaved youngsters who LISTEN when told how to do something and never complain.
This brat is another story. He's constantly whining about how he doesn't like this horse, or that horse, or the saddle hurts, or how the horse is naughty/lazy/too fast/too slow/too fat/he's tired etc etc... and does he listen?? Noooooo! Yesterday he came for a lesson and left the school in a huff because the horse in question was 'uncontrollable'. He's just rung me to tell me he's not having his lesson today but he is jumping at the show tomorrow and what time does he start.
Hello? Says who? Apparently he spoke to the YO, who of course wants to make a few bucks hiring him a horse, but didn't think it necessary to tell me (although I'm expected to be there to walk the course with him) Personally I'm very tempted to tell him horse is lame (have not ruled this out) because he IS quite simply a BRAT. Honestly I don't know why he bothers to take lessons because he doesn't listen and expects all horses to behave like machines and of course it's never his riding to blame, is it? Actually, I think mostly he does it because he wants to fit in with YO's 'cool' pupils who are all competing at 1.20m and above.
Anyway, that's my whinge for today.

Does he actually like riding? I saw some really shocking behaviour out on a pleasure ride today but then I'm not convinced the child concerned actually wanted to be riding, more a case of something that they had been given on a plate and quite liked but weren't passionate about

We have to put up with a few brats at the riding school where I work so you are not alone!! I agree with either VERY spoilt or pushy parents being the cause!

I don't think his parents ARE pushy... they're certainly never at the yard to watch him ride!
He's SUCH a git. Since I've not got the car (last minute notice and all) I've asked him if I can catch a lift with him and his dad.... It's taken 3 text messages to get a reply "I'll have to ask my dad"
Grrrrrr!! Any second now I'm going to phone YO and tell him I can't make it to the show and he'll have to walk the course with the idiot child.

I work at a riding school and although most of the kids are very keen and enthusiastic there is a small proportion that do it because it's 'fashionable'. It tends to be the younger girls in their pink jodhpurs. They love the 'idea' of riding, have all the gear and accessories but put them on a pony and they panic! Although some of them have been riding for a long time they don't want to come off the lead rein! They don't seem interested in actually riding, they just like to boast that they do it and pose in the latest gear. They aren't obsessed by the ponies like the others but riding is just an activity which jostles for position with ballet, swimming and flute lessons.
It's these kids which drive me round the bend!

Sadly this is true. Son of a lady who never used to exercise any sort of control over them

Hey, nothing wrong with pink jods!!
I think this kid feels it's cool; he's got the gear, likes to hang out with the really good riders, but doesn't understand that it's actually quite hard work to make any kind of progress. Other day he jumped a combination really badly and I told him to come round and do it again... he just left the school in a huff.
Personally I would've told him he can't compete until he can control his mood swings!
He never did get back to me about whether I could get a lift with him (personally I'd rather have had a lie in than course walk with someone who wouldn't have paid any attention) but YO texted me this morning to tell me that the mare didn't load, so brat can't jump.
Pleeeeeeeased
