I was looking at the live interview chat thing on here about a new equestrian based fitness program. I wondered what other people did, exercise wise, aside from riding to improve their performance. Over the summer hols I haven't been doing much but I would like to start exercising more after school etc but of course it needs to fit around caring for the horse! Does anyone know any really good exercises or ways of getting fitter? I am only in my middle teens and I ride a long backed, 15.2hh ex racer TB who in flatwork is quite alot of horse for me to hold together. If I could improve my strength (leg, core etc) I think this would help.

Thanks,

Laura.

In my experience, a really good exercise that works out the whole of your body (ahem) is to repeatedly lift a large wine glass to your lips. It works even better if you fill it with wine as it is even heavier and boy does it get those biceps working.

Swimming is great becuase you exercise the same leg muscles in swimming as you do when you ride. Apparently, they are the only two sports that use the same leg muscles (but I could be getting that wrong).

Yes I was thinking pilates as we have a Darcey Bussel Pilates video.

Lol Box_of_Frogs! My biceps are quite alright acctually from having a horse on DIY who likes to make his stable nice and messy. :P

I used to go running and cycling a lot when I was younger and was very fit as a result. I could ride for hours and never get tired. Nowadays I have to work full time

so no longer have the energy to go running round the countryside, and as a result I get tired easier when I ride. I do stay fairly fit from working round the yard all day but my stamina is not what it used to be
