I have been putting fleece bandages on my dressage horse for exercise. I have been told that fleece bandages do not need padding/underwrap underneath. Is that correct? I am totally confused about this, and have received conflicting advice .... my trainer has told me that the underwraps are only required if you are using cotton elasticated bandages (as opposed to fleece ones).... please tell me if this is wrong! Thanks.

As the others have said

well that's reassuring. someone on my yard was utterly horrified at me today, for not having pads underneath my fleece bandages .... and so I began to worry ....
thanks x

I thought you were supposed to put something over the tendons? It might be the way you put the bandage on - I can't remember what it's called...a strip or something...the tendons are supposed to have extra protection though

When you put the fleece bandages on, you are supposed to lay the first strip up the back of the leg covering the tendon, and then fold at the top and wrap around the leg from the top as normal.

Just means there is a smooth bit of bandage down the tendon and one extra layer of fleece to protect.

I have the half and half bandages, but to be honest I think it'd be less faff with to use either normal all fleece bandages or pads + exercise bandage as the fleece part of them doesn't seem to fit as flat as I'd like.

Ditto that(not Lidl ones by any chance?!)

The half and half bandages I have are Shires I think. Got them at a trade stand at Blair castle quite cheap (£8 for four) 'cos I needed new ones and they were a pretty colour!

(navy and burgundy striped)

I wish I'd got the Lidl fleece bandages when they were doing them though as they got good reviews on here did they not? Always next time...!

I don't put a strip down the back but I am very careful to do two whole legs worth (ie. all the way down and all the way up) with enough tension (but not too much). This is how I was taught for general flatwork (I use boots when jumping). Can people let me know if I'm doing this wrong (fleece bandages)? Thanks

I always put a strip down the tendon. The reason fleece or stable bandages aren't used for exercise is because they have no elastic in them so do not give at all. They really are for stable use or travelling only.xx

ok - so now I am not so sure I am doing it right ... because I do use fleece bandages for flatwork, and I do not put a flat strip of the bandage over the tendon .... does that mean that I could cause damage to horses legs???

I have known boots to cause more damage than well wrapped bandages (including fleece ones). I agree that if you don't do the bandages well it can cause big problems but if you do it correctly there is no harm. The place where I ride in the UK (oldencraig) always put fleece bandages on with no strip and none of the horses have had injuries from them as far as I know. I use boots for jumping and lunging / long-reining but bandages for flatwork.
