Stupid question I know but if you don't ask you don't learn!

Iv all ways used brushing boots, but treated myself to a lovely set of white bandages today, not that they ever get used!! But when the OH offers you can't say no! Lol ;)

I was taught to put them on years ago but don't remember the explanation why exercise bandages need fiberge (sp) and polo wraps don't?

Is it just the non elastic ones that need fiberge or all types? Is it all to do with the pressure?
 
I use fibregee or pads with all types of bandages inc fleece polo wraps. If you haven't bandaged for years then I would definitely use pads so you don't get pressure sores.
 
I think polo wraps became the norm because you don't need anything under them. I think research has proved they don't actually support the tendons or anything like that so all they do is protect from minor brush injuries (as much as a layer of cloth can do), oh and look pretty obviously!

I got some with my lidl special fleece blanket, might have a go at putting them on tomorrow to see if I can still remember!
 
But why is my question is it just because of pressure or is there more to it?

The stretchy elastic type bandge should it be used with fibergee or does it not really matter?
 
I worked on a polo yard a couple of years ago and was forever applying polo wraps haha! The explanation I was given is that it's difficult to over tighten the fleece bandages and very easy to over tighten the elastic bandages potentially affecting blood supply and damage to tendons.

I always use bandages on my horses these days, just out of habit really I think. I tend to use boots on the front and bandages on the back as my horses are only shod on the front and I feel they need more substantial protection there from brushing injuries. The only thing I dislike about the bandages is they can cause excess heat to build up if your horse is working hard. Light schooling and hacking shouldn't be a problem though. I was always lead to believe they offered support for tendons so I'm interested to read that this is actually not the case ...
 
You can use fleece polo bandages without pads and elastic ones must be used with pads. However, I use pads under all bandages, 1. the bandages stay cleaner for longer and 2. it stops any pressure points :)
 
Used to work on a dressage yard where every horse went out in 4 white polo wraps, every day. Didn't do a thing but sure looked purty!

LOL maybe I should have got fleece rather than elastic!
