Hi, do you all use exercise blankets when hacking out if your horse has been clipped? My boy has half his neck and tiny bit of belly clipped and I was wondering whether he would need a blanket out hacking as surely he will end up too warm? What do you all think?

only on cold days when i'm doing lots of walking (or if sub-zero)
or if it's peeing down with rain
or if it's dark then she has high viz on
but if not any of these then no

If its cold yes, she is fully clipped and it stops her from getting cold and playing up! But then we don't charge about a lot on hacks, if it was a fast one I probably wouldn't bother.

I wouldn't put an exercise blanket on him. Mine's fully clipped and only wears one if very cold weather and or poor visibility/raining etc as it is flourescent.

If it's a cold day or wet, and I knew the horse felt the cold, I might, to help his muscles warm up.
Depends on so many things - the weather, the horse, whether I intend to do a fast hack or a slow hack, etc.

Only normally if you have clipped off the hair where the blanket would go and are doing a steady hack that won't make the horse get warm.

You use them when the horse might otherwise get cold. So on a wimpy TB type you might need one more often.

You can get waterproof ones or hiviz ones that could be used more often and aren't warm. Basically though if you think your horse would be too warm, don't use one.

That's a good point - I own a wimpy Tb

On a safety note, you can buy fluorescent yellow mesh exercise sheets which would be ideal for the OP for hacking safety and taking the chill off without overheating.

Yes a lot but thats because I ride in the week after work and we are on top of a hill - and its freezing. I have ones I can take off once I have warmed up. Tend to stick to the thermatex ones when hacking out because if we change the pace/ride/horse gets hot it will wick away. Mine is fully clipped too.

Yes they are great, I want one of those when we finally buy our own. More useful than a newmarket one, too warm most of the time and horrid if it rains on you.

mine is fully clipped and i often dont ride till nearly 8pm so it can be really cold. have a thermatex one or a waterproof one depending on weather - normally would take thermatex one off after warming up as then doing enough to keep muscles warm. for hacking, if planning on doing much walk work or esp cold or raining then again, yes.
