Ok, ponio has been with me for almost 2 weeks. due to the underweight condition he was in when he arrived, he has effectively been "turned away" on good Highland pony grazing (rough grazing) for the last 2 weeks. there has also been a slow change in his daily feed to fibre based (previously he was getting sugarbeet and pony nuts, a little hay a day and no grass). He has accepted the change well and is slowly starting to put the weight on (and grow too
)
We've done a couple of inhand walks, and some "join up" style work but nothing too strenuous and have had daily grooming sessions to build our bond. Plus it's been like monsoon conditions here (ok not that bad but really really wet) since he arrived.
Starting tomorrow (exactly 2 weeks after he arrived) we are starting his fitness/exercise regime to build fitness levels and muscle tone (of which he has little). This will consist mainly of inhand walks, lunging and long reining for the first couple of weeks then we'll take if from there (depending on how he is looking/progressing etc) as we are completely flexible to his needs. However, I need idea's on different exercises to do so it's not all "samey" so suggestions please
and please feel free to suggest other things I can do. - Part of his work will also be de-sensitisation, walking over tarp etc.
His owner and friend came to visit him at the weekend. they were pleased to see he had settled. When talking with them they told me more about the "work" he had done since being backed. (he is on a long term loan to me). I was quite shocked.
He's not 4 till next month and it turns out he was backed at the end of june last year. he has been hacked out for approx 3 hours 2 to three times a week since backing - mainly fast gallopy hacks, no schooling, and has been jumping fallen logs/ditches - again after having no schooling. the "backing" process was just that heres a bridle heres a saddle, oh your ok, well heres a rider, yup your fine lets go for a bomb !
So Idea's please, it's been a long time since i've had to go back to the start with a horse and I want to do it right. I do have good help "on tap" but I would like to get your suggestions and idea's too
Thank you x
