Vet said I need to ride my newly diagnosed ems pony as much as possible. I was wondering what other people do in terms of type of ride, what you do in it and how many days a week do you ride? tia
I do one jump, 2 pole work, 2 flat, sometimes 3 flat. I’d like to hack but our situation just means that it’s not safe for me to do so.
im not really a jumper so he works much harder in the flat work/pole work than he does jumping. 1 flat session will be lateral work then the next day will be long and low getting him to stretch
Winter regime for my EMS pony has just started and he is hacked out two afternoons a week, 2 mornings a week and is ridden and leads my other one around the block twice a week. On Sundays we go to the gallops, riding club pole work clinics or a longer hack. This summer he has done at least two fun rides a month and ground permitting we do much faster work. I don’t take him in the school and he doesn’t jump. He is fully clipped, rugged and out at night.
I'm trying to shift weight on mine and doing lots of reading it seems like fast work - lots of cantering and not coming home until they are sweaty and have had a good puff makes the different. Hills are good if you have them locally
Having said that, when I Googled it then a lot of free resources came up that looked quite good! My vet said 15 mins a day of trot is needed to shift weight, so we do that - hacking, lunging, schooling... It sounds like nothing but when we started I was surprised at how much it was! (I use Equilab to track). I rarely school two days in a row and never do pole work more than once a week, because of hock issues. Trotting can be quite intense/hard work on their legs, so I pick my ground carefully and warm up well.
