I am hoping to collect my new girl this weekend and I am looking for some good exercises that will help with very unbalanced horses.

She is an Irish (unknown breeding) 6 year old who hunted whilst in Ireland and that is all she has done. She is quite short backed and naturally carries her head quite high because of her stocky build. Does anyone have any specific exercises that may help her stretch down more?

I have experience with bringing on green horses so will be doing lots of hacking, pole work, relaxed long and low schooling with her but have never had one as unbalanced as she is.

Any good tips for stocky young hunters?

Thank you.

I reckon my boy was always ridden hunter style, hence his weak back end and thick U neck (slowly getting better) one thing i noticed made a difference was the micklem, instantly. Also ride in walk on the buckle, ride a high rise trot on the long, half halt and collect slow trot on the short or on circles, really change the paces - and always encourage flexion rather than just using the rein to pull around circles.

We use an Equi-Ami on the lunge with all our gawky young IDs. You can also use it ridden if you get the full kit. It's persuasive - not demanding (like the Pessoa). In ridden work, LOTS of transitions from walk to trot to walk, serpentines are good a is half circle and leg yield back to the track. A giving hand (not a throw it at them) is your best asset!
