Exercises for lazy horses ??

my horse Tammy is very lazy and stoborn
as my instructor says she plods round in her own little world oblivious to your frantic effects to get her moving lol

i was just wondering if anyone knows of any really gd exercises to help get her listening
i know that things like transitions help but is there anything else??

Variety - Vary your riding from day to day from schooling, jumping and hacking and sometimes lungeing or long reining. Taking her out for a good blast across some fields might also help.

Mne can be really lazy, especially when schooling. I ake sure I keep things varied and try to inspire him to be interested in what we're doing by making things exciting.

Currently we're doing halt to canter transitions....probably wouldn't recommend this on a horse that isn't fairly calm and non-spooky though

Murphy gets excited by doing this and starts paying attention

I also do changes of pace within trot - all out fast trot down the long side of the school, then slow down the trot on the short side.

If she enjoys jumping try putting poles/small jumps out when schooling and just pop over them to break up the flat work.

You could also do mounted games stuff...bending poles, cones, that sort of thing.

Is she the same out hacking? worth checking she's not in pain/incomfortable anywhere?

she is very foward out on rides just dislikes being in the school
she does mostly hacking and not much schooling and i think it had helped scince i have stopped jumping as much as she now seems to enjoy it more when we do

thanx i will definatly try ur ideas
halt to canter probably wont work as she canter is her worst speed
we are getting her teeth and back re cheecked this month so might help a bit
