Exercises for long unused muscles please?

I'm about 30 years out of really regular riding and about 8 years from any real riding at all. Now at 44 I'm back in the saddle, and whilst I can still walk and trot I have no strength left in the legs to hold a seat at the canter. I wondered if anyone had exercises that had helped them in a similar situation please?
 
Your in a similar position to mr - I came back at 45 after 27 years out. I'd actually done a personal training qualification the previous year buti was completely different muscles - also wasn't as fit as that sounds as I'm very asthmatic.

The only downside is some of the exercises require gym equipment. I mostly manage with a pair of dumbells and a gym ball as there are always alternatives for the same muscles.

There is a smaller cheaper book available that had all exercises that don't need special equipment, can't remember the name but it is about a fiver....... Though nothing beats time in the saddle for building strength and fitness.
 
Get to some pilates or yoga classes thatll help strengthen your core which is the most important area to strengthen imo, itll also help strengthen and supple all the muscles you need to use
 
Thanks both, I've had other people say to fix the core and the rest will follow. The trouble is my core has been non-existent since the advent of two kids and 12 years in a computer chair. I've been wondering about yoga or pilates myself as I know both are supposed to be good for core muscles.

Anyhow, I went out hacking today, really hot, but had a lovely time, I'm riding a real gentleman at the moment - just the confidence giver I need after so much time out, I even had a pop over a jump (well off the ground trotting pole!) when we returned, but I had no hesitation in turning towards the jump so I think the 'take off' nerve is still in tack, which is a good thing. The view of my companion is that my seat didn't look as bad as I think it is, but I still need to work on it IMO.
