So basically I've brought an ex racehorse 9yrs old been out of racing 3 years .. when ridden he sticks his head up then will drop for a few strides then up again, he's had teeth and back checked new saddle etc his previous owner has said that he's never been shown how to maintain in the contact.. can anyone give me any pointers or exercises to do with him I don't want to bore him with the same thing over and over he was sold as a fun horse but I'm one that feels more in control if I have a horse on a contact.. I know many would disagree
Thank you ?

Keep a consistent feel down both reins, lots and lots of circles and transitions and I lile to do some slow work (walk/trot) lungeing with an elastic bungee. Really think about pushing her forward and up to the contact - you will need to use much more leg than you realise. Your hands are there to catch the energy created from behind. Pole work on the lunge and ridden will also help to get her using her back too. It will take time to develop the correct muscles. Alternate between hacking and schooling to keep her interested. Hope this gives you some food for thought ?

Agree with above. Lots of forward! Definitely go check out @yourridingsuccess ‘s videos on YouTube. She’s very good at explaining things in an understandable way (that helps me anyway ?)
