Exercises to build up bums.....

No HILLS????

No Hiiillllllss?????

What are you gonna do dude?????

I reckon, borrow a few hunts around your area. Enough jumps a week and you will onto a tight pair of buns in no time.

Step 1: Purchase chocolate cakes. Lots of them.
Step 2: Open packets.
Step 3: Choose a comfy seat.
Step 4: Get a cauldron of hot choccy on the go.
Step 5: Start eating and drinking :D :D :D

Oops, sorry, just read the first bit :o

Um.

Lots of transitions.
Poles with alternate rasied ends.

:D

No hills?!?! Mental!!

Transitions, and lots of them. Also transitions within the pace, really asking them to sit back. Depending on the level the horse is working at, spiralling circles, lateral work :)

Ha..Essex maaate!! ;) It certainly not as flat as Holland road here, but the hills within reasonable hacking distance are pretty pathetic...mere 'bumps'!!! Thanks for the advice, thing is he's only 4 (rising 5) but had the shoulders of a weight lifter but the bum of a baby when he first arrived. He looked like a cut and shut!! Things are looking better slowly, but he has the potential to have a lovely bum, think he will fill out nicely!!:)

Ha yeah, this works for me...maybe I should give it a go!!! :)

Yup. We used to do it with the showjumpers. Can see those muscles ripple!

Builds up the person's upper body and arms as well - wonderful toning exercise lol.

I need to invest in a strapping pad (though I think I saw a post from someone on here who said they just use a towel folded up and don't bother with the pad...can I start off tomorrow with a towel and use it whilst I'm waiting for mine to arrive in the post?!) first.

I'm wary of doing it too hard, or not hard enough. How do you gauge it? If I start off doing 5 reps, as everyone seems to recommend, and then don't bang on the 6th...say there is no muscle twitch.. surely that means I'm doing something wrong?

Sorry for the stupid questions!

Would echo this! Lots of transitions, whether on the lunge or on board. Always making sure horse is working in the best outline you can achieve, inxluding as above smaller circles, 10m loops, serpentines etc. You can then start to introduc leg yield, My horse didn't react well to the idea of leg yielding in school - he stopped which is his ' I don't know what I'm doing / I don't like what I'm doing. I have introduced leg yield succesfully out hacking, on nice quiet roads and can move him back and forth quite gradually without him knowing what is going on!

You should have seen my Welsh Cob, I got him as a 3yr old. He's always been the opposite, had a massive bum (not muscle then) and tiny front end. He's now 8 and doing alot of dressage, and he finally looks balanced :) now possesses a muscley bum and a nicely developed shoulder & chest.

Used to do it with a good body brush and metal curry comb (obviously the curry comb did not touch the horse!). Get into the swing of it and it's grand exercise! :D

Hard on the muscled areas. There should be a satisfying thud :D. Move along the body, but softer or not at all on the tender areas(!).

You'll know if you're doing it right, you'll be kn*ckered :D

Thank you! Had a go today, just using a towel. Initially I didn't get a response (the muscle twitch) so had another go and managed to get it. Need to practise now!
