As title really. Have been riding a lovely little 14.2 who is now nice and relaxed in his work and soft in all paces. I now want to get him working a little more from behind to improve his paces. We have just done out first novice dressage and one comment was that he cantered on his shoulder a little. Presume this means was a little on his forehand?
I have lessons but not as often as I would like due to money.
Have started introducing counter canter, raised poles and lots of lateral work which is helping but any other suggestions welcome :)

Circles, big to begin with then as his balance improves getting smaller, at walk then trot. Rein back to walk, then later rein back to trot is brilliant but needs a good rein back and to be totally on the leg to get forward straight away. Transitions, especially a canter depart, from trot then as he gets better from walk - a good exercise is ten and ten (ten trot ten canter strides) then five and five as he gets more balanced, that gives you plenty of canter transitions.
