Exercises to strengthen my lower legs

A good stretching and strengthening exercise is to stand with the balls of your feet on a book (not too high to start with) and your heels on the floor and then raise yourself up to stand nearly on your tip toes, then back down again under full muscle control. Do about 12 to 15 reps to start with and two or three sets.

As you get a little stronger you can use a taller book, like a phone directory or Yellow pages, but don't push too hard too soon, or you will pull both muscles and your Achilles tendons.

I would suggest squats and lunges to help stengthen your legs. They kill at first but as your legs get stronger you will feel it less. I highly recommend the new Davina McCall DVD for leg strengthening exercises. Running and cycling will also help your legs and your cardiovascular fitness which will also help with your riding in general
