Mucked out five horses today - due to my back deciding it was in less than good shape, I started trying to vary things a bit

.

So, now I have just about perfected the LungeLift - a handy little number, especially designed for those picking-up-the-sh!t you've just put into a handly little pile using the WaistTwister (sweeping).

Anyone have any more to add to my daily exercise routine?

Lol MrsM - My friend and I designed the 'Field Clearence Aerobics Workout' we were sure we could've made our fortune... it even included the full wheelbarrow dash, arm curls with full buckets, lunges, twists - the full nine yards...

People did look at us like we were odd - but we both did it every weekend and actually both lost a ton of weight! :-)

Video and/or diagrams please.

It sounds like an interesting way of getting some entertainment out of dull job.

My mucking out is a very leisurely affair - the only thing that gets a workout is my brain as I mentally go over my writing and think up new plots. I even get OH to empty the wheelbarrow if the muck heap has reached it's 'North face of the Eiger' stage

My back is starting to hurt from mucking out so any way of making it easier would be a great help (OH slipped a disk about a year back so he's no help whatsoever

)

Snap Chico - OH usually empties the wheelbarrow for me when it's spread all over the yard and not contained in the trailer.

(and before anyone tells me off for making him work with a bad back, he insists and the wheelbarrow is never mor than half full)

The only excersise I get while mucking out is my tongue

because I'm either talking to someone, moaning to Mr M for being such a dirty creature, singing to myself while the radio is on or chasing the odd chicken out of my stable!

I agree though mucking out certainly tones the stomach and those bingo wings

well, mine is more "avoidance of hurting my back again" (very boring i know) so it consists of: not overfilling the poo-picker. not overfilling the wheelbarrow. not overfilling the skip. if it's really bad, using rubber gloves and a skip rather than a poo-picker.
i did superquick poo-picking of fields all summer, twice a day, and that felt like a good workout.
if ever cold outside, i know that 2 mins wielding a yardbroom will get me toasty warm...
i'm going to resume mucking out duties soon (splinted leg improving a lot) but will have to find interesting new ways of doing stuff as there's no way i can push the barrow up the ramp, or lift a full muck-skip.

boo. poo. poo.

LOL what a great subject

I only get to do the waist twist....mucking out with fork and turning to put it into wheelbarrow....OH also empties this and fills haynet up, does dinner and water....

I only do the poo picking and rug changing....must try and think of some excersises now....

i guess i am a bit of a cheat as all mine are on rubber matting and doesn't tke long but since i have to many horses and have 6 in and the 2 ponies in the field shelter i guess my exercise is to get them done as quickly as possible. this means for me getting as much as possible into the wheelbarrowetc

My mucking out is exercise in itself, mucking out two horses (includes hay and water done) in my half an hour lunch break!
I have a great sweeping motion going with the metal pooper scooper though!

As my two are huge poo monsters, I find the weight lifters squat is good.

Take hold of huge bucket of poo, bend and power lift with my thighs - thank god I have large ones and hopefully have enough momentum to get the skip over the fence and into the muck heap.

If it goes wrong, I stagger backwards and have the real prospect of ending up covered in poo. I think I am lifting a good 35 kilos a time as it is far heavier than a 20 sack of feed which I can swing with ease.

This is why I may be small, but am fairly strong for my size - regular weight lifting exercise means I don't need a gym.

This is PennyJ here just in case I come up as someone else...

Go careful mucking out, I managed to get a punctured lung last year and I would swear on my life that the moment it went "pop" was lifting up a load of very wet and heavy shavings...

Also be carefull with the waist twisting when flinging poo into a barrow (sorry to spoil all the fun!) my physio friend told me this is very bad for your back, you should turn your whole body instead (very boring and time consuming I know!)

To make mucking out more interesting and quicker I have become quite expert at standing at the back of the stable and being able to hurl some poo from a shavings fork into the wheelbarrow at the front of the stable. Very good target practise!

Also saves you having to walk to the wheelbarrow with every forkfull.
