My thoroughbred x has been off work for 6/8 weeks from the snow, prior to this it was me who was off -off his back this is as he's a bit of a bucker to say the least, last time was pretty nasty as it was in the middle of the road.
But now he's getting fat because he's a good doer and isn't getting any work. He's just been shod so we're ready to start again. I've started him on the lunge, but I'm not sure how long and how often i should be lunging.. and then I'm hoping to progress to getting back in the saddle, but i don't want to do so straight away as he thinks he retired now he's be off for so long! So any ideas for a bit of a plan for us would be much appreciated.
Many thanks, polo pony.

I'm sort of in the same boat as you!!

Horse has been off for 4 weeks and on box rest!! I can start riding him again and have asked my nice vet for some sedaline for the first few times. I can't really lunge due to the injury so will have to fasten my seat belt!!

If you are lunging him regularly then I would lunge him really well so he is tired and let him have his moment, then when settled get on. Good luck xx

Is he clipped? Probably not if he's been off for that long but my mare was off due to the snow and was clipped before and started bucking, using an exercise blanket really helped me the first week of riding her again.
Is there anyone who can lunge him with you on him? Might help in bringing him back again possibly.

Neck Strap! Heels Down! Nursery Rhymes! and when it all goes to much close eyes and rely on horses self preservation!!!

Racing yard any one!

I would off kept his shoes off to keep him a bit sore.
I would just lunge to get his back down and get on and sit it out. I had a right rodeo horse and use to bronc every day for quite a while, teaches you how to sit.

awww hun, it sounds as if i could have written this post! lol....i havehad EXACTLY the same problems with my Welsh Sec D, due to a slightly sore back and snow etc he has been out of work for 6 weeks or so.....i went to get on him barback last week and he freaked out and broncoed me off...anyways, saddle fitter due out last week, needed to see me in saddle, i get in saddle, he decides to bronc me to get me off, without succeeding etc...i attempted to lunge him to let of steam etc, but PLEASE believe me in my case it didnt help and unless you lunged him untill he couldnt breath, if he is gonna bronc and buck with you he is going to do it either way as he is rejecting / fighting against having rider on board, i suppose its kinda like rebreaking them.honest if you had seen my Welsh D he is AMAZING at bucking and broncing and gets all the little twists in ;) he even started to do it before getting my bum in saddle, so i basically knew i had to get on him and ride all the total freshness out of him...this took TWO days! :( horses cant buck with their head up, and if you get them of the leg going and thinking forwards....just get on, very tight rein, head right up, heels down, leg on and absolutely paste it round the menege at full speed! its amazing how much respect they gain once they realise you can ride them and they cant get you off! lol...bless my Welsh his little feet were trying so hard to stop and scuffle to throw in a buck, then evrytime he wanted to stop i made him carry on! also if you move their shoulders over with the reins they find it impossible to book i.e. if your on the right rein, then lift your left and right rein up and over to teh left and vice versa....you do this in canter and you will be fine....if my Welsh can be broken out of it, ANY horse can! ha ha ha,...im sure some wont agree with this, but worked for me, he has been an angel all week, includign a bit of jumping etc, stood still to mount etc...its pure freshness, nothing beats riding it out, horses test you all the time, wouldnt bother faffing about with the lunge, just get on an do it, when they wanna stop and you wont let them they soon learn! think forward and you will be fine. i sympathise with you, i have been the same and worked myself up so much over it, but after the 1st few scary strides when i got on him, once i had him flying i knew he couldnt do it....he's now a little lamb...better than all the weeks of faffing about, just get on do it, within a few days you will be riding back to normal again..promise! (p.s sorry bout waffle) lol x
