If I have an exclusion for colic on my existing policy, would a new catastrophe cover not be worth having because it wouldn't be covered either ?

I am not sure I'd put our pony through surgery anyway but the catastrophe cover seems limited if you take out the colic cover ?

Best to speak to your insurer. If you have exclusions that preclude main ailments that would be covered by catastrophe cover then there may not be a reason to add it to a policy. Can't understand why an insurer would preclude colic as it is such a common thing that most horses will have had at some point. This doesn't mean it is necessarily chronic issue

Is the exclusion specifically colic or is it from ulcer treatment? I’m in a similar situation and currently considering catastrophe cover for Monty who has been treated for ulcers although has never coliced.
KBIS have vet notes and will let me know if they’ll cover colic surgery in their catastrophe cover....will let you know what they decide!

Pony had very mild gut discomfort/ mild colic, she was scoped for ulcers and none found. Vet even wrote a letter supporting the discomfort was so mild but insurance company would have none of it. Pony has never colicked before nor since.

I'm not sure I'd put a 14yo pony through surgery anyway. She's very special to us but the rcovery and rehab would worry me greatly and I'd be terrified of a reacurrance and further suffereing if the colic was bad enough. Is that selfish to think like that ? I'm really struggling with this ..
