Ok....friend's sister was out hunting boxing day on a hire-ling. First good gallop, the horse took hold. She tried to check horse back and left rein snapped!! Held the neck strap and tried to pull up sharply with right rein and that snapped too!

Sooo....she chucked herself off as she had no idea how to stop the horse at this point.

Question is, got me thinking. What is the "correct" way to dismount when horse is moving at 30mph? Do you jump in the air and let it gallop from under you (John Wayne!!).....do you swing leg round and drop off (but there is the back legs to contend with). Do you dive and roll?

Seriously, what is the method of choice?

Just do it the mounted games way, throw your leg over the back and hit the ground running

What an awful thing to happen, my gag snapped once in the middle of a fun ride, first time I had sat on the horse in company, but she just stopped and stood there

I think it goes something like 3000 feet,2000 feet,1000 feet open chute!!!.

OMG!!! That would be soooo scarey!! I think i must take better care of my tack or that will happen to me one day!

Errm, I think I'd want to jump clear of the horse (not sure how!) cos i wouldn't want to get booted!

xx

If I had composure...I think that is the way I was thinking I'd do it...perhaps with some of those wheelie boots on and after praying first.

PC Style and whilst you are still in full motion go and kick the ass of the person who let you ride in reins that would snap like that!

Actually both her and the horse were ok. Bit bruised but more annoyed that her day was cut short I think.

I guess the moral of the story is...don't buy cheap leather tack!

Too bloody right!!!!!!!!

I have seen hunters with two sets of reins, one set knotted and sat on the withers. I assume this is the reason for that. Or hunt in a double bridle as you're not likely to lose everything.

Or you can do it the police horse way and have a set of chains, because yobs can't cut though chains

The only thing with jumping off is that it hurts your knees

See why when I'm on bombing horses does it never corss my mind to make a quick last min dismount? Why do i wait until we're both on the floor?

I have to admitt when i look back on my bombing I wouldn't jump if i had a second chance.. One.. I wouldn't have a clue how... Two... It still wouldn't cross my mind but really because I wouldn't know what the loose horse would do... While I'm on I can have some control of the problem even if i end up with a broken ankle at least better then horse on A27 dualcarriage way... Sorry totaly off point and not helpful!!

That's totally what I would do. I have been bolted with twice and both times it didn't cross my mind to dismount. I was just praying I'd stay on.

Erm..with bolting TBs if safety's an issue the way I was taught was kick both stirrups out, use your weight to direct the horse to the safest exit point (e.g. if it happened on the road then a grass verge or bush landing would be better than tarmac!) so this could mean shifting your weight left or right, one hand on pommel, jump (feet first, not head) then roll into a ball! I know it sounds ridiculous but it was actually quite an instinctive reaction once learnt! And believe me I did try it out quite a few times!!

I stay on, it has never come across my mind to dismount at all. I feel safe on coloured mare though, used to all mad crazy things so knew she wasnt out to ditch me, but new one my god i say i would throw myself but i wouldnt too far to fall, but id poop myself if i had no reins on him.

Possibly, i actually would just warn people so we didnt have any dirty stops. I hate dirty stops with shoulder disappearing. Id rather fall into a wall or something, my personal opinion though.

God! i bale out all the time!!

both of mine used to bolt regularly, reins never snapped though, i just wimp out when at an uncontrollable gallop! Have been nicknamed "the fastest dismounter in the west" by my friends!!

I lean forward, grab a handfull of neck and mane, swing my leg over the back, drop to the floor and let go! by this time horses have normally sussed i'm off and i just grab the reins and pull them round.
Soooo unconventional, and normally get boll****d off my instructor for doing it but when i have no control what so ever, i'm off and standing next to my horse before i can think!!

Depends how fast we were going: If it was at gallop I'd wait until we slowed down ad jumped off mounted games style, if we were just canterg I'd again, do the mounted games dismount.

Sorry meant to say that you face the horse as you jump(!) leg swings over the back end rather than the front as you have a hand on the pommel. The idea with facing the horse is you can better judge the distance between you as you depart (!)
