Hi All,

Am looking to get a bit of a project/ playmate for Mr P.

I quite like the look of the Exmoor but dont know to much about them...

Can anyone shed any light/ recommend a similar type (I'm to tall for a Sect a/b) and am looking for an 'easy to run' chunky monkey to fiddle with over the winter and get going in the spring?

I don't have an exmoor but I do have a chunky monkey newforest yearling. She's such a character and great fun, playful, loving, cheeky and greedy!! I was never a fan of newforests til I rescued my girl as a foal and now I love them!! Plus she's so easy to keep, hardy little thing.

Here's the cheeky girl....

There was a post on here about getting them as they were going to cull them...i think...or that may have been Dartmoor?!

I used to show a few exmoors when i was younger for a breeder however I am not a big fan no reason in particular. I now breed fell ponies and think they are wonderful, cheap to run(no rugs or shoes and very little feed), lots of personality and will have a go at everything!

Exy's are a fantastic breed and definately ponies for adults!!!!! They do have a reputation for being lil sods but all the ones we've had have been fab!!! Cheeky but brill!!!! Good lil hunters, take you all day! Good doers so cheap and also cheap to pick up.

Newforest though.....can't beat a good newforest!!!! My chosen native breed! :D

Any ideas where to pick them up (other than the standard for sale adds) breed/ stud reduction sales.

I do quite like New forests to they seem to come up a bit taller? and I like the good range in colours (I fancy something a bit different and havent seen many Exmoors in my area)

What area are you in?

Try the exmoor pony website, they have a sales and for loan list, and also you can contact breeders through them who will have weanlings for sale in the autumn, and maybe older ponies being brought off the moor.

They are a fab breed but be wary, if you get a nervy one don;t expect to be able to turn it around just like that - some you can but others will never be properly tame (I say this with much experience of them) There are some fab ponies out there and they will easily carry an adult. They are cheap to run, beware sweet itch though.

Agree with this. They are sooooo rewarding as a project, but they are a lesson in patience itself! I have two of the buggers. My first was a project in that he was half broken (in the backing sense!), many years ago, but my second was the real project. She's come a long way since I got her last June, but I don't expect her to be a settled pony for a long time, yet - she's very nervous and is also a severe sweet itch sufferer if not managed correctly. I treat her like a laminitic and use Brewer's Yeast, with fantastic success, so wouldn't be put off getting another SI pony, now.

There are always some for sale on the Exmoor Pony Society website and often at bargain prices, too!

I seem to see lots of pictures of nice NF roans? are these harder to come by? or quite common?

How do the big NF sales work? are they all unhandled etc...

Roan fairly common in newforest, but nice!!!

The sales....can vary. Most are wild or handled very little but there are also quite alot handled, some even broken. You can look round pens and see everything, touch them if you want (beware of disease etc). You could get soemthing really nice!!! Or soemthing very poor (but still may make good pony).

If you go with box take one unpartioned as you dont know if they have travelled etc before. When I got mine she travelled in trailer unpartitioned with all doors closed. There's people there to help you load etc.

I was very very very lucky at the sales when I got mine. She has been a diamond. Do it!!! :D

Hi I had to join to say that Exmoors are super ponies . Some may take a bit longer than other ponies to back but I must add that once you gain the complete trust of an Exmoor they will be the best pony ever. I breed them and have shown them , please do not let anyone run down these ponies, they are only the original Native pony left, whereas all other breeds are really a cross match. Exmoors are quite easy to keep they like food , water and lots of love. If you want to see my ponies you are most welcome. Must add we have other native breeds to , so not againgst other natives.

Hi,

I am swinging towards the NF now as I am a bit concerned that even a bigger Exmoor wouldnt take up my leg (I'm 5'7)

What sort of prices are the NF's fetching at auction? Can you recommend a more reputable Auction (else I could end up with a herd!!) or breeder? Do they tend to be colts or any geldings, would be looking for a 3/ 4yo, would I be likely to find one at market or are they foals/ yearlings?

What's your budget vicki?

Both Laurawheeler and me have bay roan NF's, they are lovely, really nice colour and like you say a bit different. Mine is 13.2 and I am about 5.5/6 and he takes up my leg fine. They are tough little things. Great fun :)

If you live in the south NFED is a good place to look for foresters.

I have two foresters
This is Herbie. He's 12.2hh.

I'm 5ft2 so it gives you some idea of how stocky they are.

and this is my new boy Merryn.

He's 14.1hh.

There is no lower hight limit for foresters so they come in many sizes. Although they are never over 14.2hh. :)
They are a lovely breed and very versatile. :D
I've always been a welshie person but have somehow ended up with two forest bred foresters. :p :D :D

i had a new forest, he was amazing (the pony in my sig & avatar). he was amazing. NFs go upto 14.2hh & i think are "available in most colours". (that sounds a bit like they are cars, not sure how to better phrase it!)

Thankyou trickivicki :o

I've just had a look on NFED and was actualy quite suprised by the prices of some of the ponies.
Herbie was £550 inclu all tack and rugs but he had serious behavoural issues when I bought him. :(
Merryn was free (I just paid £100 for his tack and rugs etc)
I have been very lucky as I have since found out they are both apparently quite well bred :)
I heard they where selling at the new forest sales for next to nothing last time. :( If you could make it to the sales you could get a bargin that way.

I am in no great rush so might wait until May, make a weekend of it!

Laura if you hear of anyother great buys let me know!!

Sounds like a good plan to me. :) The new forest is such a beautiful place. :)
I'll keep an ear open in the meantime though. If I hear of anymore I'll let you know.
Most things I get offered come with issues though. ;) :p :D

Exmoors are fantastic! Would definitely recommend getting one, although they are now a rare breed so aren't as easy to get hold of as some of the other native breeds.

We have an Exmoor and I dont think you can rule them out!!, we have Section A, B and some riding ponies and I find all ponies are sharper than horses they make up in brains what they lack in size!! irrelevent of breed

Our Exmoor is fantastic with other horses and babysits the babys, cheap to keep, hardy and does the lead rein job with my daughter and has had quite a few wins in the show ring, I have lent him out as company for horses that have been turned away as he is fine with all breeds but he can be a quirky sod with the farrier, I think if they like you, you have a friend for life if they dont you are stuffed but arnt all ponies like that!

I think it is fantastic you are enquiring on the breed as they are very rare and are very good allrounders if given the chance!!
Will upload some pics of ours once I have worked out how to do it!!.
